I've been thinking of creating a race for the Trek universe for a while, but I finally found the inspiration to create this race last night while I was working on a book I'm writing.
Race: Lentark
Home-world: Lentark III.
Description: The Lentark are a very mysterious race, with next to nothing known about their culture or species. Physically, they are almost indistinguishable from Caitians. The single distinguishing feature is that Lentarkan incisor teeth are significantly longer.
Psychologically, they are extremely different from the peaceful Caitians. They are apparently highly territorial and extremely aggressive. It has been speculated (but can not be confirmed) that they are telepathic.
What little is known of their starships is quite remarkable. Despite obviously better materials available, they use steel hulls and copper wiring. However, their ships are equipped with federation-design type-10 phasers and photon torpedoes. However, the shields and computers both appear to be federation-designed Duotronic systems, similar to that mounted on the original Enterprise. The power core, however, (or at least the bits the federation has been able to recover) appears to be a completely alien quantum reactor of some sort.
Several of their ships are equipped with truly massive missile tubes at least two decks high, from which they can launch warp-capable anti-ship missiles with their own shield emitters, capable of dealing heavy damage to even a fully shielded starship. However, these missiles are limited to warp three, so their effective range is somewhat limited.
This race was first encountered shortly after the end of the Dominion war by the Enterprise-E. They were able, doing the initial confrontation, to disable two of the three attacking ships and destroy the remaining one. The remaining two self-destructed to prevent their capture.
Although they engaged in border skirmishes with the Fedration from time to time, next to nothing was known about them. That task would remain for the Starfleet Intelligence ship GT-40, a modified Defiant-class ship equipped with a illegal cloaking device.
Almost ten years after the initial encounter, it was able to use it's cloak to sneak into their home system, where it made two startling discoveries-
The first was the crashed hulk of a Federation Nebula-class starship, which had disappeared almost thirty years ago. Apparently, the Lentark had only been a cold-war era civilization, but had been able to reverse-engineer the technology in the crashed ship to become warp-capable.
The second, and truly shocking, discovery, was a a Iconan starbase in orbit of the second planet, now manned by the Lentark. The GT-40 made a close pass in order to to scan the station, and was able to complete its scans before being detected by the station. It retreated and was able to escape, but suffered heavy damage from a glancing hit by the station's weapons.
This starbase has caused much worry for federation strategists. The GT-40's scans confirmed the presence of several startling weapons systems, including some form of ion storm projector, capable of harassing enemy fleets almost half a quadrant away. Thankfully, the scans indicated that if the station ever was equipped with a gateway device, it was removed by the Iconans before they abandoned it.
However, estimates are that the fleet foolish enough to attack it would suffer almost 90% casualties before even lowering its shields. Thus, no attempt has yet been made to capture the starbase.
