Mission profile: The Sierra Class was proposed in late 2378 following the Dominion War, just prior to the Reman incident. It's purpose was to create a short ranged, highly durable, and highly versatile starship capable of scientific duties as well as battlefield tactics. Realizing the need for such a versatile starship, Starfleet quickly granted the development and production of the Sierra Class in mid 2379, having been completed in 2383 with the first of her class rolling off the assembly line that same year. Multiple platforms were created for the Sierra Class in the form of highly advanced sensor pods, sophisticated science labs, storage bays, and even weapons platforms for use in situations where combat may be unavoidable. A special pod, called a multirole pod, even incorporated all these things into one. Since 2383, 46 Sierra Class starships have entered service, over 2 per year, with not a single loss.
Purpose within Starfleet: To provide Starfleet with a highly versatile starship capable of handling scientific missions, as well as short range tactical assignments.
Purpose within Star Trek Online: To give players a wider selection of versatile ships instead of having to be confined to a single role, such as Exploring.
