I hope that traditional economy doesn't play a big role in ST:O, at least when its just Federation playable. The Federation, by and large, isn't about making money off of other Feds. (Something my government could learn a thing or two about).
Rather, if trade between players is a necessary issue, trading in prestige, favors and relationships with NPCs could be an interesting new type of economy. Spending Prestige to get a greater ship class or weapon system rather 'credits' or whatever. Giving 'favor points' in exchange for a set of skilled Science Department NPCs that will keep your ships save from crazy radiation.
I think the option to trade holodeck programs for replicator rations should be there, but I don't think that should be the major economy in ST:O. A new player should be able to go up to a replicator or holodeck and do/get whatsoever they want. Federation members should never have a lack of credits be a hindrance to advancement.
