Cryptic playing the Borg in-game?
« on: 15 August 2008 06:20 PM »
How about that as some new exciting form of community interaction? Jack himself talked a lot in the interview about how they want to create a game they play themselves, so what could be more natural than having them as "Cryptic Borg collective mind" roaming the quadrant and perhaps even control the action a little bit by that where necessary? It would be like a "human NPC" faction.

Is there any MMO out there that has such a feature where the developer actually takes physical part in the game in some way?

Meh, I dunno. The closest that comes to mind was when there was a big hub-bub in Eve about some higher ups being ingame and all, can't remember the specifics, may have to look it up for exactly what.

It sounds good to me, so long as the borg werent used to often as a threat, that could get rather boring after a while. The borg should be ( IMO ) used as a rare but really nasty nightmare of a problem, not the villian of the week.

GMS would make better Q than borg

GMs are different than Cryptic.

Heres what he means:

Cryptic gets together and logs onto their borg NPCs. they then warp into a sector of space and just start mauling everyone. Both sides then call out for help and have a lot of people come in and defend their space.

Q GMs would just solve problems when bad things happen.

There were plenty of Dev  interaction with the players in The Matrix online.  For the first 6 months or so there were regular live events where dev controlled enemies relevant to the story would appear and the players on the server would have to work together to defeat or out-think them.

Until they stopped doing it, it worked pretty good - no reason Cryptic can't do the same thing here.

The Borg will probably end up being an NPC race that occasionally pop up to reap havoc, where as GM's I imagine would appear as other powerful races every now and again to add some variety.

YES!

EverQuest and EQ2

GMs and Guides would come into play, creating sotries and events where players can get involved!  They give out special items only available to them.

I do hope GM events will be created for the game.

I think that its likely that their will be GM Events, though I'm not sure on what scale.

Remember, Cryptic only have 40 folks working on STO and after launch, most of those are going to be busy working on updates and expansions.....so unless Awen gets some expansion to her team, we may not see the events we would like to see.

Well EverQuest had events once every few months and they were BIG game changing ones.  The more you see in EQ2 are done with Guides (players that spend their time helping out in game but aren't paid)

I would like to at least see one event where both factions have to work together to do something (against the Borg, Q, or maybe something unknown)
