In-game Voice chat
« on: 06 March 2008 10:27 PM »
So back in the day Darron started a topic on sto.net about how they were thinking about adding voice chat into the game. That conversation continued up until the day sto.net shut down.

so i felt the need to hit the reboot button and start the conversation here. (oh noes!)

In my opinion, Voice Chat is requried for a game like sto. It will definitely make us trekkies feel totally immersed in the game. The problem comes when those people who are not trekkies begin playing, and we get people screaming over the comms about how much we suck or other stupid things. I believe that a mute command would be nice...but the game would only be able to mute so many people.

Another idea is that you could only Comm with people who were in your group/guild (fleet). Should people use the comm to be annoying anyway, then i believe that being able to shut their message down...which i guess would be considered a block/mute....but id assume wed still be able to see theyre typing.

so what do you all think? Voice chat is it needed? wanted? have ideas to make it less stressful to listen to annoying people?

:)

I think Voice chat should just be left out of initial development, it takes away from quality content, and it not very well built anyways. most players already use a dedicated chat programs.

so I say focus on real programming and leave the voice out of it, and no don't even think to force voice onto me. dot hat and the game goes literally out the window and into the trash bin.

i would love there to be voice chat and comm's.

i want nothing more than to declare "RED ALERT!", "BATTLE STATIONS!", or "cap'in, she just cant take the strain".

i would say that guild connected comms would be a good idea, or poss an accepted friends list sorta thing, where u would add ur guild mates etc.
Honestly, my Pagh is massive.

that is true. case and point: WoW. im pretty sure ive yet to use it and actually get a message in or out :P

i think that while vent is a good 3rd party voice chat, i dont like that people have to pay additional fees to use it. ie: having the option to have a free voice chat is good. i guess TS would be free...but isnt that only for like 10 people? good in a crunch i guess...

also, remember that the game has gone back to scratch, meaning they have plenty of time to have good content and a hopefully good voice chat system.

That actually brings up another good topic. Voice Recognition. Theres a game for the PC/360 coming out...i can never remember the name, but it runs totally off voice commands, and the people who have played it so far say it works flawlessly. id love to be able to shout out commands, even if only the computer can hear and use them.

edit: i just looked into it. voice chat is for multiplay only. its just to talk to people, not command :(

Which explains why i could never get it to work lol.

I guess i misunderstand the label on the box when i first bought it.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

I think in game voice chat is an essential element, especially when dealing with real player crews. It is far more efficient to give and receive orders via voice than via text. In a combat situation, in the time it takes a captain to type "Red Alert - Shields up, Return Fire" (10 seconds) you could get blown to kingdom come.

The only reason someone has to object to voice is if they are a male pretending to be a female or vice versa. Which is pretty politcally incorrect mind you.

atually the vast majority are against it due to pretty much everyone encountering the dweebs of the universe. don't want to hear the F word every other  word or whining or pure immaturity. voice chat is not critical to the game, it can be an after thought addon, but not critical to the game's launch. hence the reason i think they should focus more on coding quality gameplay and leave Voice chat programming till after launch.

but i can understand the younger generations "i want it now, speak to me, i don't want to have to read a line of text 2 secs later than i typed mine" syndrom.

That is true, but there are also those people who have not increased their typing speed to "super fast." When my father tried to play WoW, he could barely say anything because he was focusing all his attention on trying to not die. Once my friends got vent, he was able to talk to everyone.

Thinking about Males playing F characters and not wanting their voice heard...well, i guess its a non problem for me. a lot of my friends in wow are guys playing girls, so im used to it :P

One game that has recently integratied VOIP in an interesting way, is second life.

They use a system where by the chat you hear is localised, so if you're on the bridge, you wont hear chat  from 2 decks down, and, in turn, as you move around the bridge, the perspective of what you hear changes.

A very good system, that works very  well, all the time, with no lag at all. The bonus is, it uses a mere 4-5kb of bandwidth per second, a doddle for most net connections other than dialup - lets face it though, if you're playing an MMO on dialup...well, wake up!

VOIP is at a point where it can work very well in an MMO, and i would love for it to be in STO. At least have the option - for the people who dont want to talk, you can still listen, please!
