I think Voice chat should just be left out of initial development, it takes away from quality content, and it not very well built anyways. most players already use a dedicated chat programs.

so I say focus on real programming and leave the voice out of it, and no don't even think to force voice onto me. dot hat and the game goes literally out the window and into the trash bin.

I agree with Falin, let them worry about the game development we will worry about how we are going to communicate.

I changed my mind. I dont think voice should be in STO anymore. I do think however that there should be an intuitive command and control system.

what do you mean by intuative command and control system?

do you mean actually saying "red alert" to go to red alert? i could dig that too.

Voice Recognition would be a start, but I am also thinking that there should be a text to speech processor and a predictive text system - Similar to T9 on Mobile phones but 100000x more advanced.  Start to type "red" and the system generates "red alert" then start to type "evas" and the system generates "evasive maneuvers" and gives you a pop up menu or manuvers to order.  Hit enter and this is put into action.........something like that.

ahhhh, so its a typing shortcut. that is definitely something no one else has done. the only problem for that is if there are more than one command using the beginning few letters.

hmmm....

Personally I feel that in game voice chat is useless as any guild that is serious about PvE or PvP will be using Ventrilo or TeamSpeak. Plus the in game voice chat quality is normally HORRIBLE.

Interesting perspective.  A bit elitist, but I respect the sentiment.  Voice chat should be of suitable quality.  If there are third party softwares that certain groups find more suited to their taste, but a voicechat integrated with gameplay would be awesome.

One paradigm that would make voice Chat conceivable is reversing who can hear by default.  By default, typically, everyone can hear everyone.  Change the default to, no one can hear you, and you over time add people to your personal 'chat room.'

I very  much like the localised thing, and I think that should be an option as well.  But there are two instances where, at the very least, I think chat would be interesting:

A) The Captain on the Bridge

I think that the captain should be able to issue instructions to his crew on the fly.  As well as open up voice chat for senior staff on the fly.

An evolution of this would have the branching conversation tree with other captains have keywords that captains would be able to 'say' to communicate with them.  If you have a fully PC bridge team and some voice recognition for command buffs, potenitally, a captain could talk his way through the game.  Might be a bit ambitious.

B) Ready Room

Having the senior officers sitting around talking in a dynamic cutscene, especially if mouths move to match voices as best as possible... that could be kind of fun.  It could add a kind of usefulness to the ready room for quick planing and such.

For hardcore gamers who belong to uberguilds it may not be very useful, but a great deal of the player base could get some real use out of it.

I'm a slow typer myself so I would favour having voice to issue orders, as for hearing some idiot telling you off over voice, well......thats what airlocks are for. :muaha:

But no seriously, there should be a way to turn off a persons voice in a case like that or at worse wait till you reach a starbase and drop them off never to be heard from again. And lets face it, in any MMO were going to get ppl like that, yes it will be very annoying but in a game like this I think once a player gets a rep like that they will find it difficult to find ppl willing to have them on their ship, or at least one hopes.
