M.A.C.O. , Marines in ST:O
« on: 16 March 2008 05:34 PM »
It seems logical to predict we are going to be in turbulent times in ST:O and who better to fend off and secure enemy ships, planets, bases, etc...than the Marines/M.A.C.O.

If Trek is being re-imagined to some degree...what does a re-imagined M.A.C.O. look like to you?

Do you feel career paths in Security should allow you to reach specialized M.A.C.O. levels?

Could the Marine provide 'fast action' for those looking for some casual, quick fun?

With Hybrid MMO tech...should the combat be FPS?

etc..

i was just thinking about the MACOs recently and i was under the impression that they were something that was done away with...or was something that was very very rare.

now firstly: the picture looks cool.

secondly: yes, the security path should have some "away mission/repel boarder" specialty. though i personally would prefer the specialty called something more manly. Like "ultra awesome death squads of justice"

thirdly: An FPS would be very interesting to see, and easily doable, imo, as we have seen many games go from 3rd person vehicles to 1st person shooting. of course, having an mmo makes it a bit more difficult.

Who better indeed! I enjoyed their portrayal in the Enterprise series. I see no reason why they cannot be incorporated into the game.

Do you feel career paths in Security should allow you to reach specialized M.A.C.O. levels?

I think it should be implemented along that line Kinneas. I would think that certain M.A.C.O. tactics would be standard teachings in Star Fleet security, and vis-versa.

Could the Marine provide 'fast action' for those looking for some casual, quick fun?

etc..

Now this is a good idea, and I cannot see a problem with it off-hand. If I were to have to beam down into a potentially hostile situation, I think I would rather have 3 M.A.C.O.'s then three security Red Shirts! I mean, what chance have I when the Red Shirts are gone in an instant! :vaporize: :redshirt:
Why it being an MMO makes it more difficult to do in FPS escapes me knightofhyrule! Does not instancing do this type of switching? Correct me if I am wrong someone!

Ithink Starfleet Marines is a nice idea, it's one of the rare things in Star Trek, tha we know are there, but are hardly ever used. WE know there's  Generals in Star Trek (stated in a movie), so I feel a path own this direction would be possible, after all who do they send in to control a planet after the Starships secured the space above and patroling it?

. . .  Why it being an MMO makes it more difficult to do in FPS escapes me knightofhyrule!

I can see good reason to have both a RPG as well as FPS type experience available in the game.  However, the way such games are designed it isn't as easy as it sounds to pull it off.  I think that was one of the interesting aspects of the design for Tabula Rasa, they were trying to appeal to both types of play styles.

So even if everyone agrees they should provide both styles of play, it may not be practical to do so yet.  So the first question to ask might be, can your game engine handle both?

yep, thats what i was referring to. Its a kick ass idea, but is it possible to design correctly and balanced....

well thats up to the devs to find out. i dont know programming enough to have that kind of clairvoyance.

Something that people seem to forget, is that Starfleet is just one aspect of the United Federation of Planets.

Starfleet is mandated to be the exporation and defense force (in terms of ship to ship combat) within the Federation.

The MACOs were never a part of Starfleet, they were specialised ground force military, a completly different division of the Federation.

This is an example of where "non starfleet specialised careers" would come into play. Think ill make another topic on that...

Back to this one, i would LOVE to see the MACOs in STO, or something similar, just not as part of Starfleet.

Personally I would much rather see a 24 - 25th century update to the concept, you know like the Hazard Team.
