System Upgrades...tweaking/enhancing system configurations

What were your thoughts on upgradeable ship systems. Enhancements, tweaking.

Does it require ships be SIMS?

I think ship upgrades and enhancements should play a biigggg part in STO - otherwise you will just end up with a fleet of standard ships with no variety.

I remember one episode of TNG in particular, where Geordi La Forge was getting upset because the Chief Engineer of another Galaxy Class, made their Warp core Intermix Ratio higher than the Enterprise, so he spent hours trying to increase theirs.

This was a big subplot within that particular episode, and it always comes to mind easily.

Take another look at Voyager, all of the upgrades and stuff they had in the Delta Quadrant - Perhaps through nessesacity, but still, it stood out.

Then in Enterprise - The NX-02 had several upgrades and internal design changes compared to the NX-01.

So, 3 instances of upgrades, tweaking and enhancements in the show.....I think it easily answers the question of should it be in STO.

I'd like to see Upgrades be a big part of gameplay for Engineering and even Science class players.  TNG especially brings to mind numerous times when temporary upgrades were worked out by Geordi to allow the ship to do things in the short term that it couldn't normally.  Obviously there are the long-term buffs as well, but in a battle or when dealing with a serious anomaly, Geordi, even 7of9 were really good for pulling out something very useful in a short amount of time, even if it didn't make the ship eternally uber.

I think there's room for permanent upgrades, too, as long as no one's making Defiants competitive with Sovereigns.  Upgrading ships should never be the sole focus of gameplay.  Upgrading a ship's crew  (your cadre of NPCs) makes a lot more sense if you want to give that sense of constant ship progression, based on the show.
