When the time rift in our universe closes we do not know where we will be technologically or what our moral and ethical beliefs on technology will be.

I suspect with the introduction of nano technology back in the 2000's we will, after things return to normality, see nano technology a lot more on early generation star ships.

I predict we will be comfortable with nano tech and support nano tech upgrades for star ships...including 'Self Healing' systems.

Yes and no.

With the rift closing the future to a point is now undetermined.

The Borg may not exist.

We have nano tech now and how we will deal with it remains a question.

World-wide opinion at this time on matters like genetics and nanites is very different from the views held in the 60's - 90's.

In this new future, Khan may not be an enemy.

but Khan could come from an alternate universe. :) Self healing technology would be cool and I could see this happening with people and starships having repair nanites. This could be balanced in game by only small  amounts of hp (health or hit points) being restored. Maybe like 2 or 1 a minute.

I don't believe that every profession should be able to heal themselves fully or even really past a certain point unless they have the skills, for example, everyone would get a basic heal, perhaps, that with a Hypospray which would heal you for lets say 20%, the next, upgraded skill might allow you to use a dermal regenerator which would be a 30% heal, etc.  But no one should be able to out heal the Doctors or Medics, without certain skill certifications.

i cant see starfleet using nanites on a widescale basis.

I remember reading a Star Trek Voyager book once where they happend upon another civilization that was heavily dependant on nanotechnology - they even had it as their clothes.

Anyway, for one reason or another, the borg come along and they devise a way to assimilate the other nanites - thus turning the alien nanites again their owners, and assimlating then all.

Plus, nanites being mini computers, there are too many problems with computer viruses, hacking attempts...........god, i could imagine now someone hacking into the hot girl at ops and instructing her nanites to go transparent............Damn funny, but not practical..........
