I think you underestimate the power of computers and the current level of technology.

Cell Processing is now starting to make its way into desktop computers. For those who dont know, Cell Processor is the chip that is in the Playstation 3. By standard, it has 8 cores and is approximatly 100 times faster than the fasted processor currently on the market.

The best thing? It costs less than half as much! Its been out for over a year now, its just taken this long to start making its way into desktop pc's - but once we start seeing it in the stores, the face of computing as we know it will jump ahead by 10 years.

Zach, the problems not the CPU, in fasct most systems single processor 1.5 ghz processors would  handle your high graphics with 1000 players no problem. the problem comes from the system bus, graphics cards, memory and hard drive access times.

the current configuration of the workings of a PC preclude and and limit the full potential of Multi-core CPU's. In order to make games super fast, most pages of he drawn Game would have to reside in memory, be updated very fast from th hardfdrive to the graphics card to main memory, every time something has to move, it slows the system down. not only that, but the faster we make hings go, th more heat the system produces, which is another problem they are trying to address, as we know heat is the arch-nemisis of micro-electronics.

upping the bus capacity and HD access speeds are a solution, however, they have hit a roadblock on both of those HD access speed can only spin plates at a max speed before bad things start to happen, so Like i said, we'll have to wait 10-20 yeas for the actual workings of a PC to progress to the point it can handle great graphics on an MMO scale.

IBM has made some progress on these issues, but the costs are astronomical right ow, Nano-technolgical CPU, that run 165% cooler (IIRC), Optically accessed HD'sMulti-bus actitectures, and there's even some speculation of high Ram video cards that can take 100% memory control, such that they don't have to read/write to main memory to speed things up. Unfortunatly, OS's and motherboards have not progressed well to use all this technology yet.

Then we must instigate a technological revolution! Trekkies around the world must band together and say "WE WILL NOT GO SILENTLY FORTH AND PLAY AN INFERIOR MMO! WE DEMAND THAT SOMEONE INVENT A NEW COMPUTER SYSTEM! WE DEMAND THE INVENTION OF THE LCARS OPERATING SYSTEM!!!! AND WE DEMAND IT YESTERDAY!!!!"

Sorry, got a little carried away.

Personally, I actually prefer a more "carooonish" or "stylized" look to the game. The reason is that so-called "realistic" graphics only look "realistic" as long as your hardware holds up. In two to three years, it will only look badly out of date. With a less realistic look, the graphics can hold up much longer, giving the game a longer shelf-life.

You know, Juliano, you do make a very good point. It would look a bit out of date years down the line if they went down the photorealistic road.

Perhaps there is a way for them to go down the styalised road without making it look TOO cartoony. Personally, i didnt have any problems with the "space" screenshot that perpetual relased. They look sufficiently real to me. I had issues with the ground combat shot though. I really didnt like the lighting, the backgrounds, etc. The styalised characters were cool though.

I agree with Falin about having more then just the Federation as a playable team. Star Trek Online needs to have opposing teams that gets the adrenaline going. Having enemy players would be awesome an allied teams as well. As far as the graphics, I could live with a slight cartoon format. As long as the game play is great, that would be fine with me.

Just to give my two cents on stylized vs. realistic:

Try to go as real as you can. If it shows real isnt possible then go cartoon. But do not go this "stylized somewhat slightly cartoonish but still also somewhat real in the way of... I dont know... blurry... but... great?"

Its not, its awfull. No matter wether cartoonish or real, the graphics must have focus. The screenshots of PE all looked very unfocussed and blurry. Even compromises must be consequent.

About opposing factions:

It really depends for me on how detailed the Starfleet part will be. If the ressources allow to implement two or more factions but each is still highly detailed then why not. The trouble starts as soon as ressources leave you nothing more then the choice between a) two simple and undetailed iconic opposing factions or b) one highly detailed and complex Starfleet.

A Star Trek MMO does not forcingly need opposing factions on all costs to become a great game.

PS: And taking later Add-Ons into account choice b) seems to be the preferrable road anyway. Focus all ressources on Starfleet and add playable opposing factions a year later.
