Soft Canon Question

I am curious to know how the devs and writing staff will deal with some of the more questionable soft canon that is found after the end of real canon in 2379 considering they will be using the soft canon novels as inspiration.

For example, real canon establishes Janeway as an Admiral in 2379. However, in the books that follow, Janeway is killed in 2380. Now considering that Janeway was young in 2379, it would be plausible she could be still in Starfleet in 2409. Would the developers go with the real canon here, and possibly pick up the Janeway character, or, would Janeway be dead as of 2380 like the books state?

Extremely curious on this and all similar soft canon issues.

According to Jack Emmert he's reading the novels which are expanding the canon of the series. Further he told famous officers won't take a place in ST:O alike Cpt. Janeway. My guess is all people of the series are in some type part of the canon as the storyline alows it, and continuing the soft canon like the story has gone in the books based on the series.

Allthough when Cpt. Sisko has to sacrifice himself to kill Dukat for his evil plans, he'd return as he's now a noncoporial lifeform in the future what actualy makes no differents to him. I guess it'll be in ST:O a part of the storyline expanded like the novels have told.

Yeah that sorta bothers me as well, he better not use the shatnerverse novels :ugh4:

While Emmert did say that we would not be seeing any captains from the shows, he did say that there is always time travel. I would not be surprised if there was a Wolf 359 and Dominion War battle quest for fleets

 I was assuming that Mr. Emmert meant that we may be able to travel back in time and, during whatever mission it was, meet one of the legendary character's whilst there.
 I cannot see the use of travelling back to Wolf 359 except to study tactics about the Borg. One had best not change the history there, or all heck would break loose and ripple up the time line.
 How-ever, as you stated Daniels, a temporal visit from people like Capt. Sisko...or even from a travelling Crusher (or the Traveller himself), would not be out  of the realm of possibilities.

If they were to screw with the events of Wolf 359, it would invalidate the entire DS9 storyline, it's possible Sisko would not be assigned to the station, and who knows what sort of affect that would have on the outcome of the Dominion War.

Totally agree BLZBUB, they should not mess with events of that size, scope and nature.

They seem to be referencing the book in alot of the timeline updates so there is a good chance that they are using soft canon to help establish Star Trek Online.

Soft cannon is a very tricky thing.

Take the Gorn for example.  Look how they changed in Enterprise episode?  Or across the comics/graphic novels/books with them in it?

They have THREE different areas where they were from.  The planet moved from the Romulan side of the system to near the Klingons.  Heck, they went from being ruled by a King to two Aurtachs.

Seems Cryptic is taking the ruling King approach, so let's see what they choose as their homeworld.  (If you click on the link below you can get to my forums and learn about the Gorn)
