The Shape of the Galaxy

I love drawing maps. I probably started drawing fictional maps right after I read The Wizard of Oz when I was alittle girl. Tolkien and other fantasy writers have beautiful maps of their universe.
So when I began getting into Star Trek, I looked up maps. I asked people on websites for maps. Some resource sites have been helpful. But I have heard that these maps are inaccurate because they are in 2D. I'm not really sure how you would make a 3D map. In any case, this game should have some so we know where we are going.

I'm thinking if we discuss this, we can get a general idea of where everything is. Work on Alpha or Beta Quadrant first. For example, we know that the Breen Confederacy is close to the Romulan Star Empire.

 I enjoy drawing maps too, though usually the maps I draw are for my AD&D campaign world I created.

 I did see a map once a while back of where the Breen are located but as I recall, it was located behind Cardasian territory and somewhat (if you will ) to the left of it's territory when viewed from federation space.

There is one map in the Day as a Dev video from Cryptic Studios, you can see it behind Craig Zinkevich - It looks fairly impressive.

Kinneas has some official Star Trek starmaps and such, maybe he could scan some for us to see....

well by all account, astrometrically the galaxy is relatively flat, so 2d maps are considered easier to use for large scale depictions. for ship movements, it's easier to look at sub sections in 3d.

Aizer Kel: That is a beautiful map. I wonder about the position of the Cardassian Union and Klingon Empire. They fought wars with each other before the Dominion War.

Sarevok: I see on both maps that the Breen Confederacy is close to Cardassia. Which makes sense due to that episode of DS9 when we meet Gul Dukat's daughter. Though the Romulans have a proverb about them and seem to have had dealings with them...I just don't know.

I guess Nausicaa would be somewhere by the Ferengi Alliance. We don't know much about them accept that they have good mercenaries. I looked for Orion on both those maps. I've heard that Orion borders two states (it was stated in ENT but I forgot which ones).
