This competition is really simple - all you have to do is answer ten questions relating to  "The Original Series" and you will be entered into our draw.

Rules and Terms:

Only one entry per person.  Blu-ray sets are limited to Region 2 (UK and Europe) so if you are outside of this area, you should check your Blu-ray player to see if it can play discs from all regions.  Hailing Frequency / CBS accepts no responsability if the Blu-Ray sets do not play on your player.

The correct answers for this competition were:

3) TRICK QUESTION - There were no Romulans in this Episode, however Captain Kirk did use a Romulan Scenario to identify the Captain and the correct answer was "The Cochrane Deceleration Maneuver"

A silicon virus was the first silicon based life form to be discovered in the Star Trek universe on Enterprise, but it did not get a name..

if by "Star Trek" one means "TOS" then Horta would be correct :)

Quite true; a common criterion for something to be considered alive is that it has its own metabolism and reproductive systems, whereas viruses ("viri"...?) rely on their host organisms to function.  These criteria seem to live on for a few more centuries, as Dr. Crusher stated them in the TNG episode "The Quality of Life".  Interestingly, though, in this episode the following was also said:

Dr. Farallon:  There is a big difference between Data and a tool.
Data:  Doctor, there is a big difference between you and a virus, but both are alive.

Of course, Data's interpretation need not be the definitive one; after all, it wasn't long before he said this that he had to inquire as to what a lifeform actually was.
On a side note, I find it strange that they chose to focus on "life", here, rather than sentience.  It hardly seems like a good idea to defend the rights of the exocomps by giving them a status that they apparently share with viruses (which we have little concern with killing off in large numbers), or by pointing out that they have features that they arguably share with fire but not with Data (who arguably cannot truly reproduce).

Of course, in Star Trek, people seem quite willing to assign the title of "lifeform" to just about everything they come across, ranging from sentient crystals to coffee nebulae, wherefore one wouldn't expect them to be all that picky.

Memory Alpha states that "Silicon-based life was thought to be physiologically impossible before the discovery of the Horta of Janus VI. It is not possible for silicon life to evolve in an oxygen atmosphere."...  ...but I'm not sure if this was ever stated in an episode or if it's just something the person who wrote that article deduced.
Interestingly, Memory Alpha's article on silicon-based life turns up a third option, namely some "Martian insects" that "were discovered after they were uncovered by a sandstorm in the year 2021. This date of discovery of a silicon-based lifeform would contradict the fact that silicon-based life was considered only a theoretical possibility until 2267, as established in TOS: "The Devil in the Dark"."  I don't know exactly what was said in that episode, but on the discussion page somebody claims that McCoy said "Silicon-based life is physiologically impossible, especially in an oxygen atmosphere."

Personally, I answered Horta because it was the only silicon-based lifeform that came to mind, and I knew it to be from TOS.
...and I'm not exactly going to complain if this was wrong, for reasons made obvious in the attached picture ;)
