It was still over an hour to the reception, but David needed to get out of his room and explore a little. Perhaps it was also because he needed to know his surroundings and escape routes, but that was probably just old habits as well.
In either case, he made his way forward along the deck corridor, passing various ship's crew and nodding at the occasional guest here and there. He kept tugging at his dress whites, as the jacket had a tendency to ride up a little every time he raised his arm too high.
Eventually, with about forty minutes to spare, David entered the grand ballroom and made his way quietly to the bar.

'Good!', he thought when he spied the display of real, non-replicated alcohols and spirits. 'Real drink for a change.'

David ordered and received a Romulan Ale in a tall flute, then walked toward the front of the ballroom. It held over eighty seats in tables of six place settings. None of them were marked except for two reserved tables nearer the front of the squarish room. The one appeared to be for the ships captain and honoured guests he supposed.

Turning back toward the bar again, David made his way to the starboard wall and occupied a seat at a table directly across from the main entrance. His view of that entrance was crucial to him somehow, although he didn't consciously know it. As he sat, a group of six Andorians, three couples from the looks of their demeanour, entered the ballroom and progressed over to a table nearer the front of the room. He noticed then that the waiters had appeared and took their drink order, so he motioned one over as well.

'If I could get an Aldebaran Whiskey please, over ice."

'Ice Sir", the young Bolian asked? "Oh, yes. Frozen water. Of course Sir."

David eyed the waiters retreating back warily. 'Frozen water...really,' he thought amusedly.

The Andorian female said, "Who should we sit by?" T'Pora looked over the room to see many of the tables already filled. The Tellerite female said, "My husband is sitting over there." The Human female says, "By the man with the big ears?" The four women went over to the table. The table was set for eight, and there was one seat left. T'Pora glanced at the seat and wondered if Robert deWinter would find her. It was odd, to want a man to want her. Is it possible to miss someone you barely know? She then looked forward to see the man ordering whiskey. Just then a song (Enterprise theme song) began to play. The Captain entered the room. The music then stopped.

The Captain began a speech. "Welcome everyone to the luxury cruise liner the Austen. This cruise is a celebration of Federation friendship, customs, and traditions. There is a variety of live shows, movies, and places to visit onboard. Tonight the menu will feature the best dishes we have to offer. I would like to thank Chef Glanu for preparing the meal tonight. He operates the Ambassador, a formal Tellerite restaurant onboard. I would like to take the time to remind everyone to reserve your shoe excursions as soon as possible. We are going to port on Tellar Prime tomorrow. The Holosuites are open for families from 7:00 P.M- 9:00 P.M. Then it is adults only from 9:00 P.M to midnight. Now, I am proud to announce that dinner is served!

The Menu: Cabbage Soup (Andorian), Pok Tarr (Vulcan), Pheasant in Truffle Sauce (Tellarite), Pineapple Upside Down Cake (Human)

Rogers sat watching the crowd slowly fill the hall, sipping on his shiskey and waiting for the meal to start.
He'd noticed the three women who had occupied the table to his rear, and appreciated their various attributes and attire. They appeared now to be waiting for companions, but no one had shown yet.
His reverie was suddenly interrupted by a gnarled hand placed on his shoulder and a familiar voice grating near his head.

"Commander now! And you've grown much my son!"

David turned and found himself looking into the face of his long-unseen step-father.

"DaiMon Bok!"

Standing quickly, David embraced the short Ferengi who had found him those many years past, a frightened boy on a plundered star liner.

"Quit that, silly hoomon." Bok said, but not without a small grin showing through though. "And I am DaiMon no longer, but Liquidator boy!"

David then noticed the dark uniform of the Ferengi Commerce Authority, and the two Ferenginaar bodyguards flanking his step father in identical attire. He could make out the tell tale bulges of weapons under their tunics.

"So tell me son. What's the one hundred and ninth rule of acquisition?"

Although it had been years since he had been drilled in the Ferenginaar rules of acquisition, David still remembered all of them.

"Dignity and an empty sack is worth the sack."

Very good Commander! You always were a good pupil," Brok said with a toothy laugh.

David smiled back as they sat down. "I didn't want a smack with a pain whip again Father!" What brings you to the Austin?"

"I'm looking to buy her! Thought I'd take a cruise in her first and see how many of the crew I'll have to fire after I do."

"Sheesh Father. You own three casino ships already, last I'd heard!"

"A wise man can hear profit in the wind son, you know that! I won't be a Liquidator forever. The Grand Nagus has many enemies, so who knows where I could be tomorrow."

David mulled that statement over while a waiter appeared with their cabbage soup.

T'Pora stared at her cabbage soup. It was clear that Robert deWinter was not coming. The Tellerite couple were arguing with eachother over the best restaurants on Tellar Prime. The Human female was talking to the captain. The Andorian female said, "You could always try the Human with the big ears. The one that was just talking to that ugly Ferengi. What is it about Human males and Vulcan females anyways?" T'Pora replied, "We are both appear simple but we are complicated."

Rogers had finished the last course of the meal and, after bidding Liquidator Bok a fond farewell, had walked over to the bar and ordered an apéritif wine to help settle the meal, not to mention perhaps his nerves.
Meeting his step-father had been a surprise and very enjoyable. Reminiscing over old times, memories of growing up mainly on a D'Kora class cruiser, and the multitude ports of call in the three quadrants were mostly fond memories. Some were, however, best left in the dim regions of memory where he'd put them long ago.
But Bok had needed to attend a meeting with the liners' owners, so David found himself alone again, sipping a fine Picard vintage and watching the milling crowd as they made their way to the exit and gave their small talk gratitudes to the Captain before they left the hall.
David found his gaze drawn back more than once to the table that had been behind him. The four women and their three escorts were still seated and chatting, some louder than others, but the Vulcan woman in the stunning red gown seemed to be as one out of place in the group.
'No one would have intentionally stayed away from such beauty without a damn good reason,' David thought after noticing again that the empty place setting beside her must signify an absent companion.
Finishing his wine, David turned away from the pompous fools salivating around the Captain and made his way toward, and through, the servants entrance. The corridor passed through adjacent side kitchens, some still odorous of the meals just recently served. Near the end of the hallway was a connecting passage to the crew passages, a maze of halls and lifts designed to service the passengers more effectively and quickly. Taking the right entrance, David walked along the length of the ship, and as this corridor was on the outer shell, the passing windows gave a calming view of the passing stars as the liner cruised along under low warp.
Coming to a corner, the hallway led off into the bowels of the ship, but immediately in front of him was an entrance that said Level Ten Gym. Pasted beside that was a small notice from the ships engineering staff, out of order. As he entered the light came up and he found himself in a spacious gymnasium and sauna complex.Much of the gym equipment was covered in white cloth, probably to keep it shiny clean for reopening, and David passed that by and made his way to the doors at the back of the gym. He pushed one open and peered inside. This was a sauna and pool room, a very large pool, and the sauna rooms surrounding it all seemed to be in working order. His room had a sauna, but this pool looked exciting. He'd loved swimming as a child.
Glancing back the way he'd entered he slowly entered the room and let the windowed door swing shut. 'I'll just do a few laps', he thought mischievously. In half a minute David had stripped and dove into the very warm water, and began a few lazy strokes to work the kinks out of long unused swimming muscles.

T'Pora was disappointed by the dinner. The dessert was much better though. She tried to put deWinter out of her mind. She followed her new friends around the ship. A few times the other women tried to set her up with men, but they all turned out to be married. T'Pora said bye to them after a few hours and made her way back to the cabin. On the way up she saw a Vulcan woman dragging her son back to their cabin. She can't be any older than me can she? T'Pora thought. She rested for awhile and then decided to head where the light show is.

Having finished twenty laps in the tepid water of the pool, David felt sufficiently exercised to have worn off the calories from the rich desert served at the banquet. With a towel from one of the gym exercise machines in the adjoining room, David quickly towelled dry and got back into his uniform.
Now needing further distraction, he left the gymnasium area and started browsing the decks looking for entertainment...or at least something a little more exciting to do. It seemed this cruise was designed more for couples rather than lone persons, so his prospects at finding suitable entertainment seemed slim at best.
Turning onto another corridor, David noticed an itinerary posted on a small bulletin screen and walked up to it to see what was being offered tonight. The ship was due to arrive at Tellar Prime sometime around 1200 hours tomorrow. There was a classical performance on deck ten in about half an hour, but David did not really care for classical at the moment.
'Hmmm. a lite show,' David read with interest. He read it aloud.
"Experience the fantastic panorama of the jewelled falls as recreated by the experienced and wonderful artesian Banna Strands, the foremost auroral re-creationist in the Alpha and Beta quadrants."
'Sounds interesting,' David thought, and headed toward the turbo lifts down the hallway. Once he had travelled the five decks and seven sections forward to the massive holosuite that the lite show was to be hosted in, David entered the suite and looked around. The place was starting to fill up, and there were scattered seats available through out the room. Although the seating was holo created, David noticed happily that at the centre of the room was a small array of low tables and expensive looking hardware, along with some particularly ancient looking fireworks. It certainly looked as though most of the show would be with real pyrotechnics and not holo generated. That was a good sign.
It was as he chose a seat near the outer rim of the circular array of seating near a side of the room that David noticed the Vulcan woman. She had been at the table behind him at the banquet, and she was alone again now as well. Taking the chance, David walked back over to the entrance and stopped near the stunning woman. She had changed from her earlier outfit and, if possible, was even more stunning than at the banquet. David plunged straight ahead.
"Good evening Miss. If I may say, you are looking more beautiful each time I see you! May I offer you a seat beside me for the performance tonight?"
