Must Have Locations
« on: 11 June 2008 04:10 PM »
We've talked about using progressive generation for the vast reaches of space... but there are some places in the show that have been thoroughly explored, we KNOW where these places are, and what they're about.  So which ones do we absolutely need to see in the game.

For me:
Starfleet HQ, San Francisco, Earth
Starfleet Academy, San Fran, Earth
Deep Space 9 & Wormhole (closed?)
Starfleet Embassy, Random City, Bajor
Temple & Surrounding Town, Vulcan
Klingon Empire Capital, Kronos

I certainly would like to see planets of Romulans, Andorians, Ferengi, the Brier patch and some others all mapped out, but these are my must-haves in order for me to really enjoy travelling the universe.  "Ah, I feel like going to the Klingon capitol today... maybe they have some missions I can used to gain XP, I mean... build up relations between the Federation and Klingons..."

I agree. And also in space you have to have the shipyards. I think they are around Jupiter or Saturn but I'm not sure. And don't forget the Cardassians.  Other than that, the only thing is that I hope you can visit Quarks and walk on the Promenade on DS9. That would be sweet. Especially if you could sit and watch the wormhole open and close as ships pass through. At least when the expansion packs are released. And I also think that Starbase 12 in the Maelstrom would be good too. The Badlands should be modeled too, along with the random black hole or spacial anomaly here and there to keep the player on their toes.

Utopia Planatia at Mars!
Many of these places previously mentioned are great to see and interact with, but I want to get way out there, into the farther unexplored reaches of the Beta quadrant, through the Bajoran wormhole and deeper into the Gamma quadrant. I want to see the unseen and discover the unknown where no one has gone before.

Oh, and perhaps a few Romulan Ale's at Quark's bar now and again!   ^_^

Look all those places are fine, BUT the main location that is a MUST have in this game is simple. Can everyone say RISA the pleasure planet?

If STO remains set in the future like PE had intended, it is safe to say that we won't see even 1/2 of the places we know, at least not in the way we would expect to see them.

For all you SWG players out there, can we say Kashyyyk?

Fact is, in the "modern" Trek era, the universe has simply become too big to present to us in the manner we'd like it presented without spending about 10 years mapping it, by which time, the people who have been waiting for STO for 3 years will have lost their minds.

However, if STO were presented in an era such as TOS or the new vision for TOS which will be coming from JJ Abrhams, then perhaps we might see the most familiar of places, such as Vulcan, Andoria, Tellar, Kronos, Romulus and Earth in a greater detail, with more free navigable space. This would do wonders for everyone because it allows more focus to be spent on just 2 Quadrants that were still being vastly explored in the 2260's and it allows for people to begin really discovering places for the "first time" which is the mission of Trek to begin with.

The way I see it, if all the places we know from the TV and Movies are already in the game, and it is set in the future beyond Nemesis, we might as well call this "Star Police: Online" rather than Star Trek. There is no exploration in discovering places that everyone has already seen and been to through the stories already told.

Think about this line from Star Trek: Insurrection. "Can anyone remember when we used to be explorers?" Truth is, the "modern" Trek era has become nothing more than NATO in space, acting as peace-keeper forces throughout the galaxy. But back in Kirk and Archer's time, they were truly explorers first and foremost.

That is the STO I'd like to see, and that STO can be a reality, if the locations of Trek follow the proper era, and truly allow us as the players, to boldy go....well, you know the rest.

You could also use more memorable and famous points of interest as starting assignments for players.  I don't think its a good idea to make people select a permanent profession like in WoW or in some cases like the current SWG system. With that in mind, I think everyone who starts off a Federation Species (if there are multiple starting points) should start off in Starfleet Academy, they will select their own classes with mini games to get relevant skill XP.  When they reach a certain point in their skills there will be reassigned and given a Danube Class Runabout or Class 2 Shuttle.

Command, Operations, and Tactical - People pursuing command will be reassigned to Starfleet HQ - Here they will do multiple missions and make command decisions in different scenarios, perhaps even a Kobioshi Maru.

Engineering - People pursuing a career in engineering would make their way to Utopia Planitia shipyards, here they will do mini games and missions of upgrading vessels and learning perhaps how to repair vessels as well. This will help them gain modifiers for perhaps calibration accuracy when they have to re-calibrate the phaser couplings.

Medical - People pursuing a career in the medical field would head on over to Starfleet Medical.  They can learn how to use a medical tri-corder, dermal regenerator, etc, which would grant them certain skill sets, such as modifiers of healing and healing types (poisons, burns, etc).

Science - People pursuing a career in science would head over to the Daystrom Institute.  They will learn here how to use sensor arrays and perform sensor analysis.  This will also add modifiers to the players character for perhaps resource detection, and other sensor uses.

Any suggestions or additions of this idea would be nice.  What do you all think?

Must have places for me are:

The Entire Sol System, vulcan system and key planets such as Coridan, Tellar, Andoria, Alpha Centauri, Beta Epsilon, Wolf 359, Risa, Bajor, etc.

Kronos and the Klingon Home system and key planets such as Rura Penthe and any other Klingon locations seen in the series.

All Federation and Klingon Starbases including Deep Space Nine.

The Galactic Core?

My list could go on and on....

All are great ideas.

But if bringing in the Ferengi/Gorn/Orion etc ... they will need to have some planetary representation for them (and no, Klingon homeworld doesn't work for this Gorn)

I agree - any of the races included in the federation or klingon groups will need to have all their homeworlds.
