Ok I watched all the TV shows and the Movies, and if you pay attention to what is going on, you will see the following three.

1. Officers - This group makes up the main core what what we see in Star Trek.

2. Enlisted - The Non-Officer group, and we seen them pop up from time to time, even on Voyager a group of officers were reduced to enlisted ranks.

3. Civilian - We seen them on DS9, and even on TNG. I personal feel this would be a good place to put must crafters.

So in STO no matter is we start with one faction, or have about 3 factions in STO. I believe a break down under each faction should have these 3 areas covered. After all not everyone wants follow the same path, and it might open up new areas of game play that you wouldn't normally see. Feel free to comment or expand on this idea.

I totally agree. These are the 3 main groups that we see in Star Trek on the Screen, so at the very minimum this is what we should see in STO.

Then obviously you can have tons of sub groups within these groups - Officers of course will have the departmental breakdowns, command, engineering, tactical, etc, as for enlisted officers and civilians, i am not sure what the sub groups could be but i suppose it would break down into department or profession......

Well think about the enlisted for one second. What do they do in RL military? For one who do you think the red shirts are on the security teams.  :) The enlisted people are mainly doing the odds and ends jobs in the fleet, and they answer to the officers in the fleet. After all not everyone goes to Starfleet academy, and not everyone is an officer.

Maybe not everyone goes to the Academy and becomes an Officer, but the enlisted have their training too.  You can't just instantly become part of any force without some kind of training.

As for the game...I think officers and possibly...and I do mean possibly enlisted would work.  I don't think being a civilian is something the designers should work on, past the NPC area.

It really just depends upon how Cryptic decides to run the game.  PE had us all as officers...which wasn't a bad way to go.

The breaksown is mainly based on adding true crafting into STO, we all would like to see it, and this is one way it could work in the game. You would have the main idea that PE started with, then have a place for enlisted ranks. The enlisted ranks could have more of the grunt feel to it, if ship boarding comes into play, maybe they would have other skills you don't see in the officer ranks. One idea I was thinking, the security force, aka the Red shirts, are all NCOs I am sure, that only one who is an officer in the lead security officer. The whole Civilian idea is just for having crafting in the game, and other odd jobs you don't see in the officer ranks. How would all of this work in STO? Well to me it would add a ton of content, and keep the game fresh on many levels.

Hmm... I'm not sure Enlisted and Civilian gameplay is a big priority, especially for release.  Civilian could be fun for the social types and role players, having some side profession like teacher, botanist, merchant or bartender or something.  I'm not sure that 'crafting' is a big part of a universe full of replicators.

Enlisted? Just doing grunt work endlessly? Is gameplay that any of us are interested in personally doing? Is that going to be your main? An enlisted Crewman? If not, then perhaps we should leave it to the NPCs.

I'm going to vote a hearty no.  Expand some civilian gameplay as the game advances in popularity and functionality.  Maybe offer free civilian or enlisted 'trial' accounts for players who want to see what's up with ST:O without purchasing it first.  But don't put being an Enlisted Crewman or Civilian or enlisted crewman on the same 'level' with Officer gameplay.  These should be, essentially, minigames at best.

Now there's a person that is thinking. I love the idea to make Enlisted as a trial account only, or as a free to play only in STO. Seeing how some people will only play if it's free, then make the enlisted ranks the free to play. But being just enlisted means you are limited to what you can do in the game, you can see the different areas, but you can't command your own ship, or have certain rights like the Officer ranks.

I still believe there is a place in STO for the CIVs, as far as crafting I see the following in the game.

1. Android Engineer

2. Holo Matrix Design

3. Holo Story maker

4. Tailoring (Come on guys, they still make clothes by hand in some places. )  :)

I am sure there can be other things in the game for CIVs to do, but I still feel it's worth a look if nothing else.

Well I agree Civs should have their place in STO fueling its economy. If they are present maybe the option to be a criminal could be part of the game. Perhaps you could be a member of an Orion cartel or be a shady Ferengi Daimon.  To Sir Cedric: Would the Federation actually have the ability to build there own androids? because as seen in the Next Generation only Noonien Soong was able to make successful androids. If it is possible for there to be more androids in STO would you be able to play as one let alone make them.

I had this idea a long time ago, and I will clue you in on it.

If this game will still be set 20 years later, I 1st got the idea on a mission/ quest to do. Why not have a storyline called The Search for Data. In it you would visit areas from the last TNG movie, and even work with B-4 to find clues. The idea branched into the CIVs idea of having more Engineer/ Scientist like Noonien Soong, and you could mainly build your skills doing the quest for DATA. Not to say you should find DATA at the end, but it would keep you focused as you did your profession as an Android Engineer.

Of course this is just my idea, and not something the DEVs are using, but I feel it's something that could work. Along with the Freelancer idea I had for the independent CIVs shippers/ traders/ pirates. Like what Admiral of Starfleet said added the Orion underworld. But I don't see anything like that until an expansion.  :)

I'm not sure "the economy" is a big thing for Star Trek.  Sounds like a minigame for Civllians and Ferengi in this setting.

Interesting thoguhts on careers.  I personally think holo design should be open to all players at any time.

The Android Engineer is interesting... not sure how I feel about this, since Data, B4 and Lore are supposed to be the exception.  But interesting thoughts nonetheless.

I think having Civillians as merchants of whatever kind they like is kind of cool, after all, that's what civillians have to worry about, making money.  You may even just want to copy-paste Star Wars Galaxies with the mining and the crafting simple weapons and such.
