Time Travel? Should it be a part of STO?
« on: 05 March 2008 05:17 AM »
Time Travel has been seen on the Star Trek screen so many times that alot of people are sick of it. Lets forget about the continuity errors for a moment, lets not pick  apart the theorys surrounding time travel for a sec. Forget all that - the  story has simply been done so many times in trek that every time they do it again, its pretty often just the same old same old over again. Very rarely do they have a new twist on it.

So, Its been done on the  screen so many times, can it be ignored in STO?

If it cannot be ignored - how can it be pulled off in an MMORPG?

If s omeone goes back in time and "alters" the time line, how the hell does this ripple through in an MMO?

Is it even technologically possible in terms of software to have time travel done properly in a game?

Personally, i think it would be neat to have it in STO once in a while - maybe the ODD mission, when your ranked at like level 10000 or something, but, i struggle to think how it would be handled. Unless they limited what you could do in the "past".....somehow.

Should time travel be done in STO?

CAN, time travel be done in STO?

I'd like to say that an occasional time travel type mission would be fun. Heck, having the missions end in a visit from Department of Temporal Investigations would ahve a nice throwback feel to it, and could be enjoyable as well.

However, facilitating a time travel incident would require a matrix much like an instance in World of Warcraft, thus taking the element of suprise out of it, which was what made time travel episodes of Trek so fun, such as when the Defiant found itself facing the Enterprise (Kirk's Ship!).

Also, we all know that the penalty of screwing up the timeline can lead to the changing of the future, such as what happened when McCoy originally saved Edith Keeler. So how would a penalty be inflicted after a time travel event if the mission is failed in STO?

I think that a moderate to Low inclusion of Time Travel in Star Trek Online would be ok but I would hope that the core of the Plot is not based around that concept unless the game has the ability to dynamically change its environment to accomadate those changes in the past then I would have to say that it should be under very limited circumstances.

Would be hard to implement, but awesome!

Anything that has the ability to affect the entire game world is EXTREMELY unlikely in an MMOG.

However, there will be missions that involve time travel, that work as a chain quest.

Time travel doesnt change anything, remember, if u travel back in time, and do something, then u arent changing anything since when you left, in the past you had already done what you were about to do so it doesnt change things.

Except, if u do something that wasnt done in the past, then when you get back, either youve enterd a different, altered timeline than the one you originated in, and the people in the timeline which u tried to alter notice no difference, since in that timeline there is none.

Making sense? No? Well im not good at explaining.

Basically what you are saying, is that nothing would change because it had already happend even though it hadnt happend yet for you.

You are forgetting the Grandfather Paradox!

You are talking about the Pogo Paradox and/or the Predestination Paradox, aka a Causality Loop!
