German games developer GamesForge has reportedly just signed a deal with CBS Consumer products giving them the worldwide rights to develop a "free-to-play" browser based Star Trek MMORPG!

The first games as part of the deal will take players into the deep reaches of space in the Star Trek Original Series time period as well as the tumultuous and vibrant timeline of Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

“We are proud that the quality of our games and publishing services enabled us to acquire this license,” said Christoph Jennen, CFO of Gameforge. “Our upcoming Star Trek browser games will further expand our consumer base and market share on an international scale.”

"The Star Trek universe has entertained millions around the world for decades and boasts one of the most loyal and dedicated fan bases in popular culture. The new relationship will bring the storied franchise to the fastest growing sector of the games market, and to players across the globe."

“The popularity of Star Trek spans decades and is a testament to the richness and depth of the universe Gene Roddenberry created – at Gameforge, we put the same level of detail and dedication into our games,” said Ralf Adam, Vice President of Publishing at Gameforge. “Honoring the Star Trek legacy and providing the global community with excellent free-to-play browser games is something we are very dedicated to and excited about.”

Few details are available right now, however the details that we do have right now are that the game will be browser based and will be flash based!

Hailing Frequency is now making contact with both CBS Consumer Products and GamesForge, to try and find out more information about the game, and of course secure an interview as soon as possible!

More on this breaking development as and when it happens!

Update: 19:33 GMT
Following a nice phone call with the USA based PR Officer for GameForge, Hailing Frequency is pleased to announce that interview scheduling is underway!

As soon as a time and date is confirmed, we will allow questions to be submitted by the community for this first in a series of interviews!

Although I am only (slightly)familiar with GamesForge's "OGame", I really cannot say much about a Flash based Browser game for Star Trek.
There has been many browser games come and go, and if this ST one goes along the lines of some of these other's, it will be another blow to Roddenberry's beloved IP.
I have dabbled in a few of this type of game in the past, but soon lost interest in the style and playability. Nothing compares to a well designed game along the calibre of WoW or EVE or even DDO:Eberon (which I currently am leveling in).
Let us hope that GamesForge can do the game justice and not put out another Craptic ...er...crappy...Star Trek game.

A couple of people have e-mailed me with similar comments to what you have said BLZBUB.

Based on some of the browser based Star Trek Games that I have seen fans produce over the years (TrekWars is in progress, Allegiance I played an Alpha of last year, and lets not forget the open universe flash games that were done) - I think that browser based games can be very dynamic.

I have not played any of GameForges games before, however I intend to try a few of them, and during the upcoming interview, I also plan to find out exactly what they have planned for their Trek games.

I am keeping an open mind at the moment - and I think everyone else should.  Innocent until proven guilty - let a game prove itself bad before ruling it as such - you never know, we could get something interesting!

This is my personal opinion:

I'll try it out, but since it uses flash, it's bad already. Only Windows users have full compatibility with flash and mac has no compatibility. Linux compatibility is sketchy.

If they prove me wrong, I'll be pleasantly surprised and continue playing.

Honos, fortitudo, nervi!
