A Look Back at Perpetuals STO - Part 4
« on: 13 July 2008 12:35 PM »
The ball has been rolling for a couple of weeks now on a series of previously unreleased screenshots and images from Perpetual Entertainments Star Trek Online that serve to give us an in depth look at exactly what Perpetual Entertainment had planned for STO.

Throughout the development process, Perpetual Entertainment never seemed to getting around to launching a dedicated Star Trek Online Website or Forum - meaning that the games developers had to resort to using fan forums such as STOnet. This had both good and bad implications - sure, we all wanted to chat with the devs, but the environment in which it occurred should have been official - and this, the new developer feels was a major flaw.

They announced changes in the game, without any official place to discuss and explain these changes. This is a mistake that the new developer will not be making, and they will also look at some of the decisions made by Perpetual that upset people, and try not to make the same choices.

Pretty much everything about the new STO is being written again - nothing that Perpetual set in stone is solid anymore.

The new developers have taken a look at single player games such as Klingon Academy, Elite Force and Starfleet Command and of course have realized that Star Trek Online must incorporate all of these game aspects and more - and while pre-production has been underway for a good amount of time now it should be noted that YOUR opinions still matter.

We are being watched every day, here at Hailing Frequency and on other Trek Forums - so the posts and discussions that we have now may very shape the game that we get.

I have digressed. This time around we have three images all from the space based aspects of Star Trek Online. They show off some pretty amazing scenery - and hey - Is that an NX Class we can see?

Until next time folks - Keep it Hailing Frequency

Everything is bieng rewritten?  Sounds like you know a lot more about whats been going on than we've been told, from what I've seen.  If that's true, then the likely hood of seeing something come out by the movie launch seems unlikely. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong of course

And in case anyone did'nt know NX = Naval Experimental.        NCC = Naval Construction Contract.

That would be a correct assumption. And no - we wont be seeing an STO in time for the new movie, unfortunatly - though if this changes i will say so.  Perhaps if the team got a huge boost in numbers, they could get beta out for the movie, but i doubt it.

I'm always wondering how some guys can make anything out on these pics... I can see there's a space station in the first one, but that's about it...

It's both uplifting and concerning to hear the new developers are rewriting or potentially rewriting everything to do with the old STO concept. Good in that I feel a lot of mistakes were made by Perpetual, some I am very keen to see corrected. While at the same time I hope they don't swing the pendulum too far because I feel Perpetual did get certain things right.
I have been concerned, more so recently, that if the new Trek film is a success and Paramount, as hinted, wishes to serialise Star Trek XI as a new set of films based on these early characters, that the feeling may be to get the game to follow suit. This I truly hope does not happen, I still think the TNG/DS9/VOY era has the most to offer... but perhaps that's paranoia speaking :P

I don't suppose you can tell us if the "new developer" will be enlightening us to a good degree (like the era the game will be set in for example) the direction they wish to take the game in say, oh 14days and 18hours or so? ;)

I hope the generally keep the playable species list the same.  I was kinda looking forward on playing a Tellarite and Cardassian... the only thing I can only suggest is that they add 3 more playable species to round it off to 10.. or add one more to make it 8 that way it's a nice round number.

Let me point out that at a Convention that Perpetual was at, there where various images that where posted at their booth.

One of the images that where taken and later posted on STO.net was a very clear picture of that large object to the right of the space station in the first picture

I memory serves we speculated that it was likely to be some type of mobile Starship repair station. and what was certainly  warp nacelles on the side of the saucer section of that station.

The picture that bugs me the most however is the second one, I cant make heads or tails as to what those large solid pillars could be, its obviously some type of Space shot but beyond that im stuck.
