A Look Back at Perpetuals STO
« on: 27 June 2008 06:44 PM »
As we all know, Perpetual Entertainment shocked the community back in 2004 with an announcement that they were begining development of a Star Trek Massivley Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. For many, this news was the shining jewel that they had been waiting for, however, little did we know that we were in for a three year road to no where.

In the final months of Perpetual Entertainments development of Star Trek Online, they famously released the first two official in game screenshots of Star Trek Online. The first one showcased the space based aspect of the game, while the second one showcased the ground aspect, however two screenshots was all that was released....publically.

We have been given the go ahead by the powers that be to start generating some significant hype for Star Trek Online, and while it should be noted that the new developer is "not making Perpetuals Star Trek Online" - they are aiming to be completely to make a high impact game that is above and beyond what Perpetual were working on.

With that, the time has come to take a look at the first in a series of exclusive images that have come into the possesion of Hailing Frequency since 2006.

Todays image was a contender in the category of "what image would we like to show folks of our ground aspect" at Perpetual Entertainment. While they eventually settled on releasing the imfamous "Gorn" image, the staff here at Hailing Frequency feel that this image based on Vulcan did a much better job of showcasing the ground game that Perpetual had.

I think we can all agree that it is pretty spectacular, and we can safetly assume that the new developer is aiming to top this - so to you all, i say - Viva La Star Trek Online.

Please note that due to the nature of these images - in that they were never intended as official releases, the quality is lower than one might expect.

that would of been a much much better picture to show instead of the Gorn one

Guy standing on a hill doesn't fit the mold of the combatcentric WoW zombie market they were catering to.

It is a better picture, but it still makes me think I-Phone Online with that UI.

well i-phone look aside it shows that there was alot more detail into their design of civilian locations instead of showing a field, a gorn, a cadet and a phaser firing

this shows that the ground based element possibly wasnt WOW-esqe and that you could see other planets from the ground which do look breath taking, this also shows the quality of the graphics instead of the pale original one

they definitely should have shown us these instead. Its too bad that it wouldn't have mattered, lol.

How many more are there?

also, what color is at the avatar's shoulders? I think it looks a bit like either blue or gray...

I would have to say blue. If i colour pick it and look at the range of colours it is in, its blue.

It's definitely a better picture than the first one, like I said. It does show more detail about things than that really bad one PE did decide to throw out to us. I'm not terribly impressed with it though. To be honest, it's rather plain. Not quite WoW-esque, but still in that direction. The dark lighting does a lot to hide that in this image. As for the planets in orbit... MMOs have been doing that for years.

Overall, if they had shown this picture back in the day, there probably would have been less of the "you've got to be kidding me" responses that were generated.

Anyone else think the phaser is comically oversized compared to the officer carrying it? :) (See Bottom Picture)

Yeah ive thought that since i first saw the image. I guess they wernt quite finished with the hand phasers yet. Curious though, why would a starfleet officer have a phaser on a friendly planet....hmn
