Ask Cryptic 17th of September
« on: 17 September 2008 10:50 PM »

In the latest installment of "Ask Cryptic" the developers talk ships, customisation, uniforms, pvp, mini-games and more!

Thanks very much to our development team for taking time out of their busy schedules to answer these!

Quote
"Federation ship classes are inspired by the television shows. So, for example, you could have a ship like the Enterprise, the Defiant or the Voyager. We call the different classifications of ships Cruisers, Escorts and Science Vessels.

More details on the exact roles and differences are coming soon, but for now, suffice it to say that the ship roles are a combination of naval combat and traditional MMO gameplay. Klingon ships are different, and reflect their style and culture. And everything will be very customizable and very Star Trek."

So what are your thoughts on the topics discussed this week?

What stood out for me was the following question:

Quote
How customizable will Bridge Officers be? Will players be allowed to choose their race, gender, name and/or physical appearance?

I found the answer quite pleasing at first...and then it struck me! I wonder how many players will be "hiring" an all-female or all-male crew? If I was to beam over to a friends ship for some interactive PvP on that ship, I would be quite disappointed in seeing a single-gender bridge crew on their ship. To me that would not be Trek at all.
Oh well, to each their own, but I wouldn't like to see that! And more especially when you can:

Quote
modify and customize the uniform of your characters, but it will always have the look of a uniform.

I see a ship load of Seven of Nine's in tight jumpsuit's?

Have to agree with you there mate.  I'm also not sure I'm particularly crazy with the concept of uniform customisation either.  There is uniformity with... uniforms ...for a reason.

I say as posted it will be still a uniform even as it'll be modifyable. To costumize the bridge crew is a awesome idea in appearance (races) and possibly the rank skill.

PvP in special sectors & regarding for PvE to effect by seems logicly especialy space & ground combat. What will hopefully not be that limited by faction belongness in a manner of Klingon (& for further expansions then Romulan & Cardassian). I don't want to see in STO if I fight against Dominion attack ships, & I can't PvE them because of some faction restrictions likely as Medical officer.

i doubt that the uniforms will be so changeable that we will have "sexy" outfits running around. But who knows. personally, i do not like the " TNG dress uniform"  look that the ones from the trailer have.

as for the bridge crew, i am sure that there is just a "auto randomize" button for those people (like me) who do not want to customize every bridge officer they ever get. will people make all female Orion officers? yeah sure, thats Rule 34. well have to see what cryptic does to make both genders wanted.

Personally, I am not 1 cent in favor of customization on any level in STO. Star Trek is a static world, ships look one way and one way only. crews look one way and one way only. the only customization i do like si the ability to choose a race (yes choose not make) and customize the personal attibutes to the avatar (face, hair, skin color, ect).

The more I read it the more i'm scared they'll screw it over like SGW was, next thing you know, we'll have Starfleet officers running around in Halo Armour too. <sighs>

although the following peaked my intrest a tad:

Quote
Should it be before or after the playable Horta?

Playable Horta in he future? kinda going to be hard if you can customize everything and then play a race that can't be customized much.

Actually I have to disagree with you, we have actually seen one example in canon where the ships captain had choosen all of one species to be his crew.

I wish I could remember the episode, however the ship was a Nebula Class, and the crew was 100% Vulcan, there where no other speicies aboard. Oh it was the DS 9 episode where Sisko and crew played a game of Baseball against the Vulcan Crew.

TOS -  one episode "The Immunity Syndrome" (IIRC), all Vulcan crewed Ship destroyed. I have no problem with an all one species crew, it's in canon, so it's possible. In the early federation timeframe, ships were built at Vulcan, Andor and Earth, thus ships built at those yards typically had crews from those planets, as time went on, crew mingling became more common. BY TNG time, i'd think that all one species crews would be frowned on as against the ideals of the federation.

Well, I dont know that It would necessarily be frowned upon, because there are some, environmental, social, and cultural issues that would not  pose a problem if a ships captain choose to have  all of one species of crew,

for example, we know of many species that either require less gravity in order to be more mobile or need special environmental adjustments., we know that Vulcans prefer a hotter environment then humans, and we know that Andorians do not do will over extended periods of time in warm environments, So I would think that in order to accommodate the comforts of the crews, thereby ensuring that they are most efficient that Starfleet would support a all of one species crew, and that the idea of Racism is simply not in their frame of thought.

On a separate note however, I would be interested to see if STO has all of the Xendi races as members of the Federation.
