Ask Cryptic: replies
« on: 27 August 2008 09:26 AM »
Cryptic posted their first reply to the "Ask Cryptic" thread here.

Also, they linked us to an interview with Emmert on Ten Ton Hammer.

Quote
Will Star Trek Online be considered canon in any respect? How much of the game will stick to the canon?

Al "Captain Geko" Rivera (lead designer): Every series and movie is considered canon, and we are staying very true to this in our development. Star Trek is rich with lore and history, and there is a great deal of material to build upon as we move into the 25th century with Star Trek Online. We are working with CBS to ensure that everything we create is true to Trek and makes sense.

We know that fans want to play Star Trek Online because they want to explore the Star Trek universe, and we are striving to deliver as authentic an experience as possible. Our team has seen all the shows and movies and we're watching them again every single day. We are also studying other soft canon resources such as novels and comics. From those, we are looking for inspiration and references to further enhance our game. Where it makes sense, we will include some soft canon elements in Star Trek Online as well.

Will I be able to trick out my Bird of Prey with green flame decals to show off when I decloak to "pwn Federation nubs"?

Captain Geko: One of Cryptic Studios' hallmark features in all of its games is giving players ultimate customizability when it comes to their characters. We are fully utilizing our character creation technology in Star Trek Online to include customizing both characters and starships. You will be able to customize your ship's geometry, as well as its color, decals and fleet insignia.

Star Trek has had some of the best scores and soundtracks ever made associated with it in the past. Can we expect just as much attention to go into the sound effects, music and ambience as we would hopefully see in the graphics area?

Captain Geko: Luckily, Michael Henry, our director of audio, is a longtime Star Trek fan and an accomplished musician and composer. Trust us when we say that Michael will be creating authentic Star Trek music scores and ambience – and not even a Gorn attack can stop him! We are also working closely with CBS, and its team has provided us with access to a massive library of sound effects from all of the series and movies. So phasers will sound exactly like phasers should.

If I'm not in the mood for ship combat, gaining Starfleet's favor or earning credits doing jobs for Quark, in what ways will I be able to advance my character doing what I want to do most: exploring the galaxy?

Craig "Zinc" Zinkievich (executive producer): Exploration will never take a backseat in Star Trek Online. Heck – in all the series, Starfleet is always sending captains off to chart new systems or classify nebulas. So we don't view exploration as a "break" from other gameplay – it's integral. Expect to be encouraged to boldly go! And as an incentive to explore space, discovering new civilizations is one of the major ways to open up new resources and equipment and make new alien recruits available to you, your fleet and your faction!

My question is whether the universe will be static. For example, if I log off World of Warcraft and then login a week later everything is pretty much still the same. Nothing has really changed. Will the world be dynamic in STO?

Zinc: The universe of Star Trek Online is shaped and changed by the actions of the players. The Federation and the Klingon Empire will be competing for influence and resources throughout the galaxy and players can influence the results through PvP battles and a system we're calling Competitive PvE.

The actions, victories and defeats of you and your faction will affect how the economy and history of Star Trek Online unfolds. Exploration is always happening – expect to see new planets and races discovered that were unknown the last time you logged in. Your actions could be the deciding factor on whether these new planets side with the Federation or the Klingons.

You know, I find it interesting that when in vegas, Jack was saying he was going to be a big part of it's ( sto's) production, but in the interview by ten ton hammer, he is saying he is doing very little in developing the game as he is working fully involved in champions online.  *shakes head*

I'm beginning to wonder just what is fact about the game now at this point and what is not, however there at least seems to be an indication that the uniforms can not be altered. Now if only they will be doing the same thing with the ship exteriors, I 'll feel a lot better.

As for the beam down to a planet, I'm not sure what to think >_<

i don't see whats wrong with only having your "group" beam down. personally i think its an ingenious idea. It totally eliminates the ground based quest mob stealing problem.

think about it. if everyone could beam down and kill the same klingon for the same mission, wouldnt it kill the feeling of being the only one doing this quest? i always felt like that when i played wow. SWG did the same type of "youre the only one doing this" quests.

I like being the only one on the planet also, instead of oh look theres a couple of other away teams, what are you doing, waiting for the Romulans to respawn. :@

The use of complete instancing of planets is a show-stopper for me.
But I do realize that the words, "certain planet" were used.  So there is hope for me, that not all planets will be instanced.

I can understand having certain planets instanced, but not all.

My reason of opposition to full use of instancing is that this limits the possibility of encounters by other factional parties.  Not all encounters must be combat related (Don't government pass treaties between themselves from time to time?).  An example (oh no, not an episode example), was during a 2 part episode in which the Federation, Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians were out trying to get all of the clues for this great mystery, which may have been a powerful weapon.  Sorry, but I forget the name, though it is a popular set of episodes.  In the end, all four met up and claim the last known clue.  There were tensions, but no combat.  When the mystery was solved, this built a better understanding between the Federation and Romulan Star Empire (I'm not spoiling the ending for those who may have not seen it).

Such an encounter with four faction interaction of players would not be possible in an instanced world.  Instead instanced worlds, create static themeparks, much like going to Space Mountain at Disneyland.  A balance of instanced and noninstance I can accept, but not complete use of instances.  That takes out the RP of a MMORPG and the socialization.

As I see it "planets" have the same basic functionality as certain types of dungeons in other games. How could they *not* be instanced? Some instancing is required for things like that. As for encountering other factions, well, isn't that what starbases and the like are for? Starbases are towns, and planets are dungeons. You have to think about this game as a reskinned, modded version of other MMOGs, because in reality, that's all it is. Gameplaywise, at least. Hopefully storywise and artwise it will be unique:).

Following Nemesis to be considered Canon.... or is it an intrepretation of a possible future, alternative just in case paramount come up and drop another story set after Nemesis. whch contradicts it.

Create a starship hopefully. I keep meaning to develop one using Lightwave 9 but never get round to it.

Very intriguing answers, although I'm slightly worried about being able to mod ships' geometry, hopefully they'll consult the corps of engineers' manual and set some limits for it, hehe.

As far as game canon, I'm sure it'll be a 'possible future timeline', just in case Paramount ever quite gets it and decides to make a post-Nemesis movie.

I'm quite interested to see how time travel will affect this 'Competitive PvE', hopefully that can't be modified, because as we are all aware, there's no way in hell we're keeping up any Temporal Prime Directive, we're gonna exploit the timeline out the yin yang if you give us the chance...:P  With any luck, most time travel will be Holodeck simulations, free reign in there would be just fine and fun, ^^

Exploring sounds like it's going to be fun as hell as well as vital, I'm looking forward to my first First Contact.  I wonder how they'll put together a 'civilization maker', if you will, for that big ol' galaxy to be populated with tons of helpful (or harmful) species...

Nemesis is a fictional story from a fictional universe.
