Destroyer; Commissioned: 2397

After the Dominion War, the Klingon Empire embarked on an aggressive period of starship design and construction to replace ships lost during the war and subsequent conflicts.

Facing the increasing demands of Chancellor Martok and the Klingon High Council to create more ships in less time, the design teams at the shipyards of Ty'Gokor looked to the past for inspiration for new ships for the Empire.

The Raptor class of the 22nd century was a small frigate intended for use as a scout ship. Its limited weapons and small crew compliment made it a ship for hit-and-run raids rather than extended conflicts. It was, according to lead designer Kurak of the House of Palkar, "capable of winning a battle, but not a war."

The new Raptor shares the basic geometry of its ancestor but is larger and packs a much more powerful punch. The ship is classified as a destroyer and is fast, maneuverable and armed to the teeth.

An improved cloaking device allows it to travel at warp six or higher without radiating a subspace variance detectable by Federation sensors and particle dampeners limit the Raptor's emissions of tetryon particles. Ablative tetraburnium alloy hull plating adapted from captured Federation technology allows the ship to fight longer and harder.

Fore and aft torpedo launchers and disruptor beam arrays give the Raptor the ability to take on multiple foes at once, and a disruptor cannon and twin disruptor beam banks make it a dangerous opponent. While many of the weapons on the Raptor class are designed for a frontal attack, it can deal damage from almost any angle and then turn quickly for a decisive strike against a wounded foe.

The Klingon Defense Force is assigning some of its most aggressive and ambitious captains to the new Raptor vessels, and they have scored some impressive victories against Federation and Romulan targets. Captains of Raptor class ships are fond of overcharging their weapon banks for greater effect, and Federation ships facing a Raptor are warned to be prepared for these devastating attacks.

If the Raptor class ships have a weakness, it is that so much of the available space in the ships is taken up by weapons and shield generators that the limited medical facilities are ill-equipped to deal with large numbers of wounded crew. When asked, Kurak retorted that this was not a failing of the Raptor class, rather it was a reflection of the Klingon warrior ideal to fight with honor, to strive for success and, if necessary, to die in glorious battle. "Klingon warriors do not need healers to lick their wounds. Klingon warriors fight only one way – to the death."

This new Raptor is packing some serious fire power and highly capable defensive systems. It will be a pleasure taking one on!  :startrek050:

 What is interesting though:

...wondering what these targets actually were? Certainly not bases, but even a Sovvie sounds like it would have it's hands full one-on-one with this new Klingon class.

 Totally awesome! :startrek049:

That is awesome, it looks as if it is from the ENT time period.

Thanks, Zack

no sick bay, no labs, fight till dead, somebody's a big fan of B&B. that's nto a real Klingon, they won;t die senseless deaths, even accidents happen in space travel, and they do scientific research as well.

sorry i really can't believe they're going to follow the bastarization , neaderthic approach B&B forced on us for the Klingons.

I'm just curious. Are you batting a thousand on the whole "I hate everything Cryptic and STO" thing? Certainly seems like it....=)

I would think that a sickbay would be standard on any ship, without having to say it. I'm sure that it has limited research capabilities as well, but clearly yes this is a combat vessel, no doubt for patrol duties as well as heavy combat.
Though obviously an advanced form of an old design, the pic is a bit awkward looking but very klingon in appearance. Not bad at all, can't wait to see if they revive the old D7 :D .

Actually 500 ;p

I was hoping since they're screwing everything else up that they might, just might reverse the bad descisions B&B made and give back some dignity to the Klingons ;)

Then let me get up to the plate and continue batting a thousand, with the clarification that I don't hate Cryptic or the idea of a Star Trek Online specifically.

I don't like it. It's not completely out of line with Klingon philosophy, of the B&B era at least, but it doesn't strike me as being very "Klingon" otherwise. If it wasn't for the red coloring, I'd of assumed it was a Romulan vessel or something. It doesn't have enough hard straight lines or enough of the the sharp curves of Klingon Design Philosophy. Klingon's are minimalists, but this design goes beyond that. Sure, scientists are looked down on and Klingon Medical Technology isn't as well developed as the Federation's, but the the belief is honor through battle. I can imagine that the most of commanders who control these vessels would be the among the worst kind of Klingon. It doesn't fit with the established aesthetic of Klingon Vessels either (except maybe one vessel from the TOS-era, which was primarily gray when used by Romulans), and I just don't like the concept of it very much. Then there is the back story. I don't particularly like that the Klingons and Federation are basically at war again, but yet there will be Klingons in Starfleet. It makes very little sense from a continuity perspective. I also have a general problem with the story that suddenly, after years of peace before the Dominion War and strengthening ties after the events of the Dominion War (Sisko and the Federation basically helped save the Empire), the Klingons are back to their old tricks and hostilities towards the Federation. I'm weak... I know this game will probably be bad from my perspective as a Star Trek fan... the more I learn the more I hate what the game is becoming and how it's drifting even further away from the Star Trek Ideal than even PE's version of the game was doing (which I was also critical of). But in the end I'll probably be a hypocrit and by it anyway, in the off chance that I'm wrong. But, this is not a Klingon vessel.

This is a Klingon vessel: :startrek004:
As is this: :startrek050:
This: :startrek052:
And this also fits the aesthetic of the Klingons:

I'm fine with the ship. I do agree to a limited extent that the Klingons being the big opponent again is kind of tired. On the one hand, I can see how Cryptic would want to capitalize on the recognizability of the Klingons, most people who have ever heard of Star Trek know about them and it makes for a better social experience than if it was, say for instance, the Borg or something. Besides, you usually see more Klingons at any convention these days than any other race. They have a built-in fanbase.

That being said, I enjoy the nostalgia of an old school Fed vs. Klingon fight, but that's all. I BEG Cryptic to not fall for the same trick that Star Trek: Enterprise did and try to recycle what used to work. TNG didn't. DS9 didn't (for the most part). Maybe in the beginning have the 2 sides fight, but then come together later on against this 'mystery threat' and have the option of serving with each other, that I'd love to see.

I'd also like to see more attention paid to the 'independent traders' (i.e. Orions, Ferengi, pirates). I kinda like the idea of sneaking up on some poor unsuspecting Saber-class ship in a stolen Klingon Bird-of-prey and swiping their warp core. =D
