TVGB: I was curious about that. Can you capture territory? Might the Klingons overwhelm Star Fleet or the other way around?

CZ: The neutral zone is going to end up being static and sitting there as PvP, but the areas outside of that, we plan on having fluctuate based on who’s winning the overall battle.

I thought they stated before that it was the places INSIDE the PvP zone that will change because of the combat there.  When did they change that?  Wonder how it changes.

TVGB: I’ve been reading some of the forums and boards, and I get the sense some aren’t happy that everyone starts out the game as a captain. Did you ever think about having people start more humbly?

CZ: We did…we thought about having people play different roles on the ships. We didn’t think that having people start as the guy in the transporter room who sits around, waits, and then turns a knob…I mean 15 minutes into the game, people were saying ‘i want to be a captain’. So we thought, ok, let’s give them what they want. The majority of the people we asked said they wanted to go out with our friends, form a fleet, and then explore new worlds. And so we figured we’d focus, rather than, on every single aspect, i mean, do you need to be a barber or a bartender? We figured we’d focus on the core aspect of the game–the core desire of the majority of the players.

I still don't think people are getting the whole "captain" concept.  A person can own a boat IRL, never been in the navy and STILL be called a captain of their boat.

So just because a person is a Cadet, they own a shuttle and they are a captain in a sense.

TVGB: So how does that work into the game?

CZ: I think there will be a lot of other advancement within the game in the way that you discover items and bridge officers, rather than ‘I killed a Klingon, i get 5 dollars.’ The game is definitely not like that. But you do earn credits through Star Fleet or the Klingon Defense Force.

*finds a random Klingon and punches them out*  Woot!  I got a Lincoln!

It was a meh interview.  Most of the beginning is what was already known but some was quite interesting.

TVGB: How big do these ships get?

CZ: No one is going to play Star Trek Online to fly around in a shuttle craft. We’ll start you out in a light cruiser, and you can move up to the point where you’re flying Sovereign Class starships.

You heard the man folks. Sovereign class!   /giggidy

Well I for one was rather angered by some of Craigs comment regarding, the idea of players playing boring roles of bieng a bartender or standing around in transporters turning knobs, this is the most ignorantly patronizing comment he or cryptic could have made. Especially when a great many of us here made it clear to them that we wanted to build up to the role of captain by holding bridge positions as a group of poeple working together. Even if this could not be implemented in the initial launch of the game, it still could have worked by limiting such coperation to away team play, since there will be instances where groupings of players will be required to work together.

Otherwise there was some interesting info, worth the read, but Craigs comments regarding the above really rubbed me the wrong way.

Alot of thier comments have rubbed me the wrong way, they've stated time and time again that they;re "dumbing down" the game for the masses. it's insulting to think they think the average cnsole or PC player is a mindless moron who can't handle a little complexity in  a game.

I can definately see the benefits of starting at a lower position or class.  I think it would be pretty fun starting as someone coming out of an academy.  But I have a feeling Cryptic wanted to leave that to the single player game experience.  (I wasn't in for the debates before so I cannot comment)

Blackfire@ - I really hope they don't dumb down the game ala WoW.  I like having to think strategies and the like, that's why I play EQ2.

Though I know it will be quite difficult for me to fly a ship.  I can't handle flying and firing at the same time (it's just me, others prolly have no problem) and I've never played any other ST game that uses fleet controls (even in the older ST games, like 25th anniversary and the TNG title I cna't think of, you still had option of PC control to fly the ship and/or weapons)  I would like an option though to give control to the nav when flying in battle.

Well for all the emphasis that Cryptic are putting on having your own Bridge crew with unique ability for the main positions on the ship, I would certainly hope that you CAN hand over control of a particular system to the AI when you want to and just give it some basic instruction.

Hey Hey Hey Hey! Easy there Craig, lets lower the bar a bit, lets all start in runabouts/scouts ships.

Insert that order when you're going to do the next interview with Craig, ok Zach?
He's cutting the grind too much, on the other end too much grind hurts. Certainly not CL's lets lower the bar, DD's or scouts.
