P2 Entertainment Closes Down
« on: 28 February 2008 01:07 PM »

Following reports on WarCry.com about the closure of San Francisco based P2 Entertainment, STO-Zone/Hailing Frequency has been able to contact former sources in the company who are confirming that the company is closing down.

P2 Entertainment began their downward spiral in last 2007 with the announcement that they were ceasing development on their highly anticipated Gods and Heroes Game. Shortly after this, they were sued for fraud by Kohnke Communications in a lawsuit that was eventually settled out of court. In early 2008, P2 Entertainment announced that they were ceasing devlopment of Star Trek Online and had passed the I.P to another San Francisco Bay Area Based Devlopment Studio.

News of the closure does not come as suprising to many people in the industry or the gaming community - and many bitter trek gamers are happy to see this company gone, once and for all.

P2 Entertainment, Formerlly Perpetual Entertainment was a company founded in March 2002 by Chris Mcgibben and Joe Keene and was an American developer, publisher and operator of networked multiplayer games and MMORPGs. Their headquarters was in San Francisco, California, USA.

I am of two minds: I'm glad P2 is gone because I think the game they were making isn't a game I would overly enjoy, but on the other hand, at least a Star Trek Online was being made.

Oh well.

Adios PE/P2, time to let the professionals develop the game, whoever they may be.

Sad news... as it means that STO will be pushed back much further, but good news because its not dead! STO won't go down that easy, Alter Ego may have won the battle, but he hasn't won the war!

after seeing what they did with G&H, i'm not suprised. I mean who'd want to work in the future for a company that one day is actively working a project, the staff thinks everythinbg is fine and dandy, then the next day they get pink slips and told the project is over.

even if they got STO out the door, they'd have such a bad rep with programmers, none but the mst desperate would flock to them in the future.

Falin, PE didn't just wake up one morning and close down GnH, they closed it down because one of thier main investers was having major financial issues and pulled out, this meant that PE no longer had the funds to carry on production with GnH and was forced to close it down. It doesn't matter how close the game was to release, without funding to finish it off and ship it there was nothing to be done.

Same goes for STO, the reason the plug got pulled is because the publisher pulled out days before the rumour that STO was dead, Its worth noting that the same publisher ditched a few other titles as well as STO that same week due to a refocus in thier titles. Once the publisher pulled out the investers followed, afterall, the publisher is an extremely important part of the process. The PR blitz literally wasa week or so from happening until the publisher pulled out. This comes from a couple of contacts at PE which are extremely reliable.

Sure, the management at PE were rubbish at the PR side of things, but alot of the problems GnH and STO suffered were invester and publisher related and not something PE should be held entirely accountable for. STO was one hell of a lot further along than alot of people realise, I saw the space and ground aspect of it myself over a year ago (ingame engine player live). Most of the concept art that was getting released was well over a year old when the public saw it.

Ultimatly, I'd say the PR side of PE was aweful, theres no refuting that, but the talent of the development team was extremely awesome.
