I think a drawn out war after the Dominion Wars to return to explore strange new worlds is not quite how that result it was at stardate 5000. To suveying especialy in the game like turning it into a Grindfest can be boring all the time.

To focus on combat should have its limits I agree as the Federation philosophy is. A more of the Dominion War & less of the Borg is what I like very well by Cryptic. As a further development to the happenings after the war against the Founders. A peace with of course the Klingons & too with the Romulans seems durable.

A sufficiant UFP is how I can imagine what the game in RR needs.

It's easy to speculate on what might be the reasoning for a more combat oriented slant to STO, but I must agree with BL that I'll wait to see how the timeline pans out.  It could simply be that they're trying to take it more into TOS territory, with skirmishes between Starfleet and other factions.

Though I have some doubts, lets hope they really live up to what they are saying.

As for ship logs, I'm not sure how they might be used, would there be a visual element involved, allowing us to record certian moments of achievement? or perhaps allow us to record moments of humour that invariably happen unexpectedly from time to time that you could share with your friends?

    That would be interesting.

i guess RR...but to make a game...idk, combat needs to be in there. i mean, i doubt well just be able to open fire on random npc ships, but they are probably trying to say that they want to see large fleet battles (eg dominion wars)

I just have a hard time believing that a fun MMO can't be made without combat, or at least with minimal combat.

Why the continous war? Shouldn't the Alpha Quadrant powers have learned their lesson after the Dominion War? The Feds and the Klingons should be stronger allies than ever, the Romulans should be trying to make peace because of their weakened state, and the Cardassians should be of little importance because they got crushed. The Federation's goal after the war was to return to it's exploratory roots.

Cryptic seems willing to overlook that.

Yes more exploration is what is needed, all to many terk games have all had the "we are in a war and we need to win" then "we are explorers and are out here to explore the final frontier"

I couldn't agree more. The combat and war aspect has been overdone. Something needs to change before Trek can restore it's good name in games.

I understood  it to be that they (Cryptic) took a chunk of the Alpha quadrant and sliced it into sectors for the game, so we are supposed to be in the Alpha quadrant at launch.
Where the Ocampan comes from is anyone's guess.

Since Klingons come from the beta quadrant (iirc) I presume at least part of that has to be in the game.
Ocampans come from Ocampa, near the (now destroyed) Caretaker array in the Delta quadrant. The only Ocampan we've seen more than once is Kes from Voyager. However, not even she, or her descendants could be near the Alpha quadrant, since she left Voyager in 2373...
