[Legacy] ODF's "isHero" Is What?
« on: 16 February 2010 07:54 AM »
As you may have read from an earlier post, I want to start figuring out modding Legacy (again). This is a simple question as the title shows. In the ODF files, what does "isHero" mean for a ship? What is the difference between an ODF with that to one that is identical without that line? Only controllable by AI maybe?

Thanks.

I know that there are some Hero Ships in the game, but I am not sure what they do or what affect the ODF setting has on the ship.....maybe someone else will know.

I am unsure if it is still used in Legacy, many are old A2 code elements that haven't been removed. In A2, it changed the way the tooltip showed the class and ship name and (i think) altered target priority. (making them naturally, the highest priority target)

What ever happened to "starting fresh from the ground up" programming?
Thanks for the replies.
I may tinker with it once I get into the ODFs. See if the enemy comes at me more heavily with it on for a ship.

If you read the comments in the ODF files, its actually alarming how little the Legacy team knew about the Armada 2 Storm 3d engine. There are lots of "We don't know what this does or if it still works, but we'll leave it regardless" remarks.

Makes it easy to go from modding A2 to Legacy, and also makes you wonder what could be done.

BTW Did you know the maneuvers the AI uses in Legacy are merely the stock A2 circle, cloverleaf and arrow formations (FINALLY coded for the AI to use them, a major pain with A2)

It really was shocking how much Armada 2 code was used in Legacy, but I suppose thats what happens when you develop a game on less than $2 million dollars.

That sounds like alot, but when you compare it to budgets of any other game....well, at least we got a quarter decent game right?

Star Trek Online's budget, by comparison, was over $30 million, and Starfleet Academy, from 1999, had a budget of $2.4 million, which for its day, was HUGE!

Squire James, I have not looked at A2 files in years but now that you mentioned it, yea, I can see now what you and Zach mean. I never put it together before that the code is all basically the same. Now that I look at it, they could have cleaned up and tested the code more. Had volunteer beta testers to try code with all the "does this still work stuff" removed.
