Star Trek Newton
« on: 08 October 2009 09:18 PM »
Hey guys, I would like to announce to you here at the Hailing Frequency forums a Star Trek fan game I have been working on with some friends the past couple months. We are very close to completing the first episode, and announced yesterday at the AGS boards. Rather than simply link I have copied the original post below.

The original announcement can be found at the Adventure Game Studio forums at the following link.

Upper Tier Studios proudly presents:

Star Trek Newton - Episode One: Anomaly

“No great discovery was ever made without a bold guess”

-Isaac Newton

Story:

Crewman John Fischer is a recent graduate of Starfleet Academy assigned to the USS Newton, a Constitution-class vessel currently tasked with performing scientific surveys in Sector 004. On the completion of his first week aboard his new assignment, John begins to realise that the reality of life in Starfleet isn't all chasing hostile aliens and meeting strange cultures. In fact, it can be quite dull.

No sooner does he log this gloomy summary than the ship is rattled by some unseen force that disables many of the ships systems! Isolated and unaware of what is wreaking havoc on the Newton, John must get to his duty station and help himself and his crew stabilise the ship.

About:

Star Trek Newton is set in the Original Series era (around the 2260s) and the titular vessel is a sister ship of the Enterprise.

Team:

Disco- Animations and additional design
Magintz- GUI

Progress:

We are pleased to inform that the game is, for all intents and purposes, finished. With a complete alpha, we are now turning to beta testing and spiffing up the code and adding a few more interactions/music. Expect the completed game to be posted before November.

Series:

Each episode is intended to be one part of a three episode story arc, with each featuring roughly 40 to 60 minutes of gameplay.

Thanks Zach :D There is a very small amount of work left on this before we start testing, but I don't expect that to take long since we fix things constantly as we play and test additions several times a day :) As of today there are only about 5 outstanding animations to complete and a couple of the backgrounds, although previously finished, are getting a few extra bits added to be just that much more interesting in the final :)

It feels odd in a way to be announcing a game that is essentially finished, very close to release, since in other communities I'm a part of it is more common for a game to be announced shortly after the idea phase and that often goes unfinished :P

It is rather satisfying to be working on a Star Trek game that is in a different vein than most Star Trek games, commercial or fan made. Point and click adventures have been my passion since my first PC and I think it is perhaps the perfect way to tell stories in the Star Trek universe when it comes to games (although I do like nearly every space shooter related to the franchise :D).

Today was a rather satisfying day in production as I have completed the final animation :D Well final necessary animation... we may add a couple idle or other incidental ones to make the game that much more "alive", but these will be over and above!

The beta testing has been going on for the last week and a bit, with loads of bug fixes and many more interactions and descriptions being added daily.

Meanwhile, new characters for the next episode are already being designed, so will have a head start on that when that starts coming together. Additionally, the second episode in this series has a title, which for now will only be known to those who complete this one ;)
