Here is a little video of the shipdesigner, it shows me adding some components to the two default starter ship templates, the scoutship and the colonyship:

http://trek-tube.com/play.php?vid=275#idxqic5pcljzYvIXtDBxiL

0:03 - logging in to the server
0:13 - opening the shipdesigner window
0:17 - selecting the scoutship and colony ships
0:23 - the game goes to the next turn.
0:28 - adding a phaser to a empty slot
0:32: -replacing engine (now ship is invalid)
0:37 - puts engine back
0:40 - saves template
0:42 - selects the colonyship
0:45 - adds 3 colony modules.. ship does not have enough power
0:55 - replaces colony modules with sensors and 2x phasers

Minor update, I've added maneuverability/agility (how fast the ship moves and turns at impulse) to all ships as well as signature (how visible the ship is on sensors).

These two values varies on the base hull and components.. For example adding lots of armor makes the ship less agile, but adding thrusters and impulse engines improves it.   Adding armor, sensors, warp engines and power makes ships easier to target.. while adding cloaking device makes it harder (while cloak is active).

These two variables will be used in combat resolution (big slow ships with high signature will be easy to hit, but can take a punch.. Small fast ships will be harder to hit)

Minor update, here are a few words on the specifics on each faction.. Each faction will require a different playstyle

Federation
Well balanced, strong ships, excellent research and colonization
User will have to focus on research, colonization and ship design.

Klingon
Well balanced, strong weapons and ground combat
Slow research, so player has to utilize the superior weapons and combat

Romulan
Well balanced, best cloaking ability, can use misdirection (false warp signatures)
User will be able to use deception and strategy to attack the enemies when they are weakest

Cardassian
Industrious, uses smaller/weaker ships, but they are cheap. has "superweapon" (ATR-4107)
Player has to focus on fleet management, and using larger swarms of ships, and try to use the ATR-4107 without it being intercepted

Dominion
Does not have starbases but the gigantic jem'hadar battleship, good ground combat
The lack of star bases makes the logistics very different, and offensive must be planned differently. Changelings can be put on enemy planets to cause havok.

Almost done with shipdesigner, now possible to create new templates and duplicate old ones. Just have to implement delete and transfer new designs to server..

Also made a little sketch of the chat system.
It will be tabbed and have a channel for galaxy (all players) and faction (just your faction).
And of course private chats :)

So far there are around 200 avatars, and I plan to let players select avatar freely, not limiting it to faction.. so Federation players can choose a gorn/klingon/borg avatar.. But maybe in galaxy chat, each user in the userlist could have a background color of their faction.

Any comments, or ideas regarding the chat system or the in-game mail system?

>.>  Look at that chat box! It's got...*swoons*...it has TIME STAMPS! I haven't seen time stamps in sooooooo long! :P

Seriously though. Is there a reason behind having the date in the time stamp? I would think just the time would be sufficient...but that's just me.

Hehe, who doesn't love a good time stamp when they see one?

Dates on timestamps...

Either chat will be saved on the server, so you can always see the latest (say  100) lines when you log in..
Or it will be "stateless" so you cant see what is written when you are not logged in...

I'm probably going for the later unless I get some good reasons not to, in which case you are probably right and "date stamps" wont be needed =)

Yet another shipdesigner screenshot, this time with a Obert Class hull fitted with warp core, sensors, fusion reactor, phasers level 2, torpedo launchers and shield emitters

I would like to change the previous statements, that the game will probably have sound but no music to...

"The game will feature full sounds including voice, and a truly awesome soundtrack"

I'll post a video of the game with in-game music and sound this weekend

Ok, I got a bit tired of shipdesigner which is almost 100%, so I made the sound system (and the game will ship with some great eve-online like ambient music made by AlienHand).
You may also drop any .ogg file (mp3 is evil) into the music directory and it will be played ingame at random.

I also started on the chat system, and it's now possible to get messages (1 is generated as a test by the server every turn), and write messages to the "galaxy" channel, which will have ALL the logged in users. A channel for each faction will also be added, as well as private user to user chats.. (maybe custom channels after beta sometime).

The lag in the chat (1-5 seconds) is hard coded for testing, will probably change this to 1-2 seconds instead.

Hey Klogd - If you need a nice female voice for voiceovers, I'm pretty sure K'suan would be willing to help out.

Well, I'm going to continue with the synthetic voice (to at least get the actual lines down), but if someone can provide better voices and are willing, then that would be great, and just feel free to contact me.

Same goes for the graphics (all pictures and icons which are .png files and can be replaced/edited), so if anyone improves upon them and sends me a copy, it will be released in the next version of the game) :)

I designed a kind of minimap, that will show the most powerful (most developed) starsystems of all factions.

But how to implement this in the game, I have 4 options so far, and any input would be great.

1) Everyone can always see the entire minimap all of the time(it does not show empty star systems, only asteroids are shown in the attached image, but those does not have to there). This however will be kinda bad for small games with only 4 players, and small maps as it will show were everything is

2) Everyone can see the minimap, but fog of war is taken into account, so you can not see what you have not discovered.

3) Like above, but the fog of war is shared for your faction (that is, you can see everything ALL your allies have discovered.

4) The minimap becomes available when you build a specific building that is VERY expensive, and you can only build the building after doing lots of research.

Option 5) Minimap i available from start, but only your allies are shown until one of the following happens: a) you build a superstructure (starfleet intelligence, tal shiar / obsidian order / etc..)
or b) all your systems combined intelligence (comes from building intel centers) reach a predefined high level.

Option 6) like above, but the full minimap is revealed by having a starship that has a very special and EXPENSIVE component :)

I added a poll on the front page of www.trekwar.org it would be great if you could go there and select your favorite minimap solution
