Never saw any of that happen. When you think about it, kind of everyone knew within the last moments of that site that all hell would break lose over there. Its no real shock that people do that. When all hell breaks out, you see people taking advantage of the situation (looting, vandalism, running around acting like they aint got no momma's etc).

Bethesda most likely shut it down as their license was up or almost up. They had a license, they didnt have the franchise till death do us part... The site most likely had a lease on the domain name and webspace and with their license not covering the new movie, it made sense to shut it down.
At the end of the day, Bethesda is a business. A business that has costs associated with it. They dont make games for free, they cost alot of money (wages, development costs, upkeep etc).Legacy was a business decision that was also a game.
If you look at Legacy as a business prospect, its common business practice: outsourcing. They outsourced development on all their ST titles thus providing an influx of new games from multiple developers. Some of them did better than others but as much as many people would hate, Legacy was the most successful of the lot.
Outside the US, Legacy did pretty well. So well that it stayed in the premium pricing range in many countries for quite some time after the heavy discounting of the game in the US. It didnt do too well on the PC but the 360 sales were consistent and kept selling. Where I live, its almost impossible to find the PC version of Legacy as it was withdrawn (aka discontinued). However the 360 version is available and is a consistent seller.
Legacy certainly was by no means the worst game in existence as so many people made it out to be. I think many people should go out and play a game called 'Two Worlds' (set up to be an Oblivion beater) then go play Legacy and we will see if the 'Legacy is 'censored'' statements sticks...
