I always liked Admiral Rikers' Enterprise-D variant from "All Good Things...". Although I did not see the need for the third nacelle, I enjoyed the increased phaser capacity under the saucer section, and the generally 'heavy battleship' feel of this variant.
Perhaps an amalgamation of Falins' idea of an expanded 'Carrier' capacity, with more firepower like the "All Good Things..." variant.
Initial designs by Probert showed a small section of the saucer that would separate...instead of the D's entire saucer section as we know and love. Perhaps you could incorporate some of his initial design thoughts into your variant also?
