Hey Kinneas!  I just found this website through the trackbacks.  Pretty cool stuff.  I just posted an extremely large post (over 30,000 words) about my thoughts on designing Star Trek Online.

I'm really trying to get a lot of STO fans discussing these major issues.  I've already posted a version of this long article on the STO official forums in an attempt to really spark a movement.  As a Star Trek fan and admirer of the potential to be had taking Star Trek into the MMO genre, I must say I fear for its integrity.  Anyways, most of what I have to say is in that article, but I just wanted to let you know about it since you seem to share a similar vision.

Yessir! Earlier today I read your post(s) on STO.com and I must say it was very inspiring.  Using Pirates as an example was a good idea.

I too read your post over on the STO boards, and loved it. Very similar to what I tried to do with my "vision" for STO. If that game was every made, I'd never need another game to play, I'd be set for life.

Something tells me though that we won't be seeing it, not yet anyways...

good luck alex, they're a stubborn WoW bunch, i can;t getb them to move past insta travel/destination missioning to semi-realistic flight time/joureny missioning!.

PS nice to see you since the days of SFC Old NTDN from the IC group here ;)

  A good article and and agree with it whole heartedly, but as I posted in the comments for it. There is so much that one could do on a station in non contested space that it would be dizzying, "if" those options were to be made available by cryptic.

  Murder or assault investigations, ship inspections for smugglers, ship overhauls and upgrades to visiting ships, diplomatic problems, the danger of Ion storms to a station, prioritizing who gets docking space and access to a stations repair facilities. It really is quite an endless set of possibilities. Perhaps a sick paaenger arrives and turns out they carry some sort of plague known or unknown.

YEAH! Puzzle Pirates - like gameplay in STO! If they really do that this game is going to take a place between the big names of mmos!
New game concepts together with the old ones that satisfy ones primitive ... erm... desires (0o  I guess you know what I'm talking about) would bring this game to a total new level of mmo design.
One of these "desires" that gives you the kick I already mentioned on the official board I'd like to see. Till now it was focused on collecting things and level up to evolve. One fundamental "desire" is also the instinct of survival which has not been pushed by the big names of mmos so far. Escaping out of situations you can not stand up against is what I would really like to see in a PC game. It has a bit of the feeling of old horror games like Resident Evil... it's hard to describe though.
Ubisoft now is developing such a game where you have to survive in a City destroyed by an earthquake (title: "I Am Alive"). If Cryptics manages to put such an element into STO this would indeed be outstanding.
