Picard formed a Task force to blockade the Romulns during the Klingon Civil war, Kirk was ordered to play wargames with a task force of other ships when he had the experimental conputer on board, there's numerous refrences to it in the shows.

Well to that regard that represents a collection of smaller groupings that have a very specialized role.

So i can see that being used to describe a grouping of players that range from 2-8 people that are setting out to accomplish a predetermined task, or simply raid and hunt in game. but that description does not accurately describe a group of 75+ individuals, So while I can see the term Task Force being used, youve got to remember that in the circumstances given by cannon those where acts of aggressive behavior by the Federation to show a force of power to an opposing enemy. If STO is all about death and destruction then sure, go for the term Task Force. Then i guess they might as well call it STO:Mirror Universe Online.

With that said this conversation is very difficult to argue especially given the idea that we do not currently know what the new developer plans are for creating "Guilds" in STO.

The way PE had planned was to allow a central hub where individuals could either serve aboard one ship and then come and go in their own individual ships as they pleased.

So I guess we will just wait and see.

1 person = Star Fleet Officer

2 to 8 persons = Away team

1 - 75+ Persons = Fleet

hrm, well one person is an officer or crewmember.  Two to Eight as an Away Team, or team of some sort seems reasonable.  However, before we jump back to describing a Fleet, what about a ship's crew?  A single ship, could that be crewed by two to eight as well?  Naturally this raises the question, "How many players per ship?"  I'd rather not go there, but we might need to do so in order to answer the question.  On the other hand, maybe this is one of those questions we just have to wait for the developer to weigh in on.  The game design may dictate what we have to work with here.

That being said, I hope the ship sizes and crew requirements are flexible.  I know my friends and I would like to be able to eventually crew any size ship, although we probably wouldn't have enough players to realistically do more than crew a shuttle or runabout.   :o

That being said, I like to think the larger ships could easily handle a crew of 75+ players.   ;)

Or perhaps we're thinking more along the lines of a game such as Eve Online, where everyone has their own ship.  In that case I can see why you skipped right over listing a ship's crew and went straight to Fleets.  I guess I was hoping the crew of a ship was similar to a corporation/guild in other games.

So I guess we will just wait and see.

heh, no argument there!   :p

I envision the following system, based on the idea that multiple players may serve on a single ship, as bridge officers and department heads (Chief Engineer, CMO, etc.) :

A single individual player is simply a STARFLEET OFFICER.

When 2 to 5 players join together in a permanent grouping, they are a TEAM.

Temporary Groups would be known as AWAY TEAM.

When 6 to 20 players join together in a permanent grouping, they are a CREW.

When 21+ players join together in a permanent grouping, they are a FLEET, if the following conditions are met:
- The leader of the group must be a Rear Admiral, Lower Half (Commodore) or higher.
- There must be at least 2 ship commanding officers of the rank of Commander or higher.
- The group must be in possession of at least 2 ships with bridge officer positions filled.

This only works if all of these conditions can be met 100% of the time. for instance what happens if at the start the "Fleet" meets all of these conditions and is approved as being a "Fleet" then along the way key components that make up the requirments can no long be maintained, what then?

In looking at this I think we are making this out to be at its core much more complicated then what it is. all the developer has to do is define a word that represents a component of a game.

so whether or not they use the term Fleet, or Guild, the literal definition of the word is irrelevant, because that term will be loosely used to describe a large gathering or group of individuals.

I'm definately going to have to go with Fleet as my choice.  While there should be some ground missions, everyone will be working off of a ship.  Starfleet designates its grouping of ships as Fleets.  Plus, calling them Fleets sets us apart from all of the other MMOs.

I agree with Athos, the Star Trek designation is fleet. Its Starfleet not Starguild.  :)

Guilds and Clans are simply too WoWish for something as technically savy as Star Trek!
