Lonesome Trekker's Island
« on: 16 November 2010 12:55 AM »
As we near the end of the year, I have decided to give my final grade to STO. (For my own benefit, really.) I promised myself I would give it at least 6 months to get rolling before I chose whether or not to stick with it, or shelve it.

It kills me to say it, but I'm really leaning towards the latter.

I, like every Trek/gamer nut out there who messed their jeans a little when the Star Trek MMO was announced waaaay back when, to the many months of uncertainty as to when (if ever) Perpetual would get off their asses and make it, to the Cryptic pickup, to launch and beyond, wanted just one thing: to play it. To captain their own ship, create their own crew, and boldly go. I just didn't expect to hit the metaphorical end of the universe so quickly.

Now I KNOW the arguments. It's a work in progress. New content is on the way. I just can't reconcile them when 9 months later, I find myself only playing it for maybe an hour a week just to play the new content in these new episodes. Which I DO like, btw. This new idea for user driven content may very well save the game, but I have to ask the question: Why the hell does Cryptic need us to PAY them to MAKE CONTENT for THEIR GAME?

I think the answer may lie in making the game free.

If you want to charge for the new company created episodic content, fine. If you wanna microtransact the players for every new thing, ship, character, uniform, etc., that's OK too. Just stop charging me 20 bucks a month for basically, well, nothing. Cryptic made their Champions Online MMO free, and that has shown new interest. I can tell you this. When the new Star Wars: Old Republic MMO comes out, I will be gone. UNLESS Cryptic shows me it's willing to go the extra mile to retain their players.

I love Star Trek. It will always be #1 in my heart. But in these rough economics times, I'm not shelling out $20 for this game anymore. Will that make me unpopular? Perhaps. But I want content for my dollar. Cryptic's just not scratching that itch anymore. Sorry.

Educational? Really veraponz, what did you find educational about it? Do you even agree with Jatal?
I certainly do, and for most of the same reasons. It would be helpful to the OP if you could enter your thoughts on the concepts put forth.
