I didn't say there shouldn't be restrictions, like what should and shouldn't be given away. =)
Take an MMO game I currently play off and on, Everquest 2, or EQ2. Say I wanted to get my 'epic' weapon quest completed, something that's a major part of that game. If I wasn't part of a 'raid' guild (those guilds that take on the really BIG nasties in the game), I wouldn't be able to do certain parts of it, hence that accomplishment would forever be denied me. And THAT'S not fair.
I do understand why some have the opposite view, I once held it myself. But when the young gamer becomes an 'older' gamer, they begin to see the other side. Now I know that BLZ is supposedly older than me (I'm almost 40. Bleh =)), but IMO the older gamer has to juggle MMO playing time with many other responsiblities, so less playing time.
Now that's not to say that the REALLY big accomplishments shouldn't still be quested for, like the aforementioned epic weapon. Maybe I could buy a part I needed for it, but I couldn't buy it outright. Something of that scale might work, that helps close the gap between the solo gamers and the 'giant guild with all the toys and we're better than you' gamers. =)
Or a shield enhancement, but not the whole ship. Or special crew NPCs. And that's just off the top of my eternally thinning head. =)
