Microtransactions - How do you feel about them?
« on: 26 July 2009 07:40 PM »
So its pretty much confirmed now that Microtransactions are going to be a part of Star Trek Online.

These will be additional items that you can purchase, indepentantly of your monthly subscription cost, that give your character/ship little bonuses.

They will be available through other means, such as mission rewards or perhaps salvage, but those who wish to flash the case will be able to obtain them via Microtranscations.

How do folks here feel about that?   Does it create an un-even playing field?  Is it wrong to ask you to pay a monthly subscription and then again for items?

greed pure greed.

you either do full service Sub or you do full service MT's, there is no gray inbetween.

with a paultry 100k subs (that is the low ball ammount), they can bring in $1.5 million a month! there is no way that their overhead is anywhere near that ammount. if they're having a problem with that ammount not being enough, raise the costs to $16 or such.

But as i said, that's at 100k subs, i'm betting they will exceed that one at least in the first 2 years averaging about 200k subs. so there is exactly no reason for a Microtransaction of any kind.

I don't care if it's just cosmentic, this is a bait and switch tacitc and the players wll not put up with it. suddenly i have to pay X ammount to get Y item that is hould get from my $15 a month i already pay. it's a slippery slope, what's to stop them from sddenly putting ina  new ship class and then saying "well you can either work for it through this quest line, or pay $10 and get it now!"

And what's wrong with that?

If Player X didn't have the 10 hours a day to play a questline to get a toy, why should they be denied having it at all? Because Geek Y who DOES have the time says so?

Oh, and players WILL put up with it, because Cryptic plays by the golden rule: He who has the gold makes the rules. I have no problem whatsoever with any of the examples set forth. It seems a fair way to balance those who have time vs. those that don't (or have no patience =)).

I just don't understand how it's suddenly become evil for a company to try to make money. Oil companies, car companies, doctors, big business, little business, etc. Cryptic has 2 goals to achieve with STO:

1) Create and support a quality product
2) Make a profit

Period. If you don't like it, don't play.

Oh, and dude?

Spellcheck.

Seriously.

I have said it before and I will say it again...I have nothing but disregard for the micro-transaction within the game setting.
If they want to use these cheats....YES! I said cheats...them put them on a separate server. I will earn my rewards, not buy them. Seriously, I fail to understand todays mentality that getting ahead in a game...a game for pity's sake...should be the be all and end all of some players. They cannot get to the end of the game by the rules laid out when they buy it, so they go somewhere and down load some cheats to get past the hard parts. I wish real life were so simple.
If they are going to put them in, Cryptic can take the micro transactions to a different server.

In most recent gaming history the last game to do this is Battle Field Heroes, EA's limited but fun in browser Battlefield copy. this is where i think Microtransactions would work. The game is free to play but if you want better guns or different uniforms you have to pay a small fee.

In an MMO it doesnt really work, i mean like the previous user said its greedy. when STO comes out we will already be paying them for our subscription each month which will be in the ball park of 15 to 25 USD per month. assuming 30,000 people buy in to this game at launch thats $750,000 (@ $25 per person per month) for just the basic subscription. id say that 30,000 people is a pretty low number but at minimum 30,000 people playing the game will keep the bills paid and the employees happy. there shouldn't be a need for Microtransactions if you know the game is going to turn a profit, its just going to be an annoyance to us, the gamers, when we bust our fingers trying to get up to galaxy class when a noob pays cryptic some extra cash and gets there in half the time.

Its unfair and not necessary. I hope this doesn't show up in the final product but i wont really be surprised if it does.

I didn't say there shouldn't be restrictions, like what should and shouldn't be given away. =)

Take an MMO game I currently play off and on, Everquest 2, or EQ2. Say I wanted to get my 'epic' weapon quest completed, something that's a major part of that game. If I wasn't part of a 'raid' guild (those guilds that take on the really BIG nasties in the game), I wouldn't be able to do certain parts of it, hence that accomplishment would forever be denied me. And THAT'S not fair.

I do understand why some have the opposite view, I once held it myself. But when the young gamer becomes an 'older' gamer, they begin to see the other side. Now I know that BLZ is supposedly older than me (I'm almost 40. Bleh =)), but IMO the older gamer has to juggle MMO playing time with many other responsiblities, so less playing time.

Now that's not to say that the REALLY big accomplishments shouldn't still be quested for, like the aforementioned epic weapon. Maybe I could buy a part I needed for it, but I couldn't buy it outright. Something of that scale might work, that helps close the gap between the solo gamers and the 'giant guild with all the toys and we're better than you' gamers. =)

Or a shield enhancement, but not the whole ship. Or special crew NPCs. And that's just off the top of my eternally thinning head. =)

This is another topic which I would like to revive now that Champions Online has launched to provide some insight into how Microtransactions in STO might work.

For a start, I havent really seen much in the way of Microtransactions in Champions over the past week or two.  There are a handful of objects which you can buy via microtransactions, but at the moment, there dosent seem to be alot occuring there and I do not know if this is something that is going to change or not.

This leads me to believe perhaps that at launch, there may not be much in the way of Microtransactions in STO to begin with.....I don't know what to expect on that front right now.

Thoughts people?

As it stands now in Champs, I find it a non-issue.
It just sells "Action figures" - think of non combat pets in WoW, otherwise known as vanity pets.

The thing though, I can't even access the page to buy the points, let alone spend any. The website still has issue they need to iron out (I still can't see my characters on the website).

I don't really know how I feel about the whole thing actually. I've thought about it and I can't really say anything until I experience it. If it becomes where you can only buy certain gear in the shop, yes that would annoy me. But as someone has mentioned, if I just don't have the time or patience of going through some long convoluted quest just to get this item that would allow me to play in some new area without much difficulty (I'm drawing on my experience from WoW, as there are a lot of annoying quests and hoops to jump just to get something that seems like it should be available through crafting or some other simpler way), then I don't see a problem. Though I would then think if people are preferring to buy this item instead of questing for it, they may need to take a look at the quest and fix it! (I'm hoping the devs don't think of the money aspect tho, and actually fix quests are krap (krap with a "C" is censored?) - I can see the danger there too, where they purposely create krappy quests so that people would rather buy the item)
