Romancing trek....
« on: 02 December 2008 06:26 PM »

I saw this thread on the trek forums and thought I would port it over here.  Apparently someone was asking about being able to get into romantic relations with npc's and players, pointing out the many episodes of Kirk, Riker and others. While it may be possible to 'date' someone, the devs have made it clear that they want this game so that anyone can play it no matter the age. Most MMO's will allow for players to 'get married' and I dont see any reason why one could not do this in STO, Afterall a ships captain has the authority to marry do they not?

I find the whole subject amusing in general, especially for all those people planning on visiting Riza.  They will all be sorely dissapointed when they head to the souvineer shops there, buy a Horgon statue and all they will be able to do with it is watch it collect pixelated dust. :D

LOL, I can't wait to see where this topic is going to go.   However, I'd rather the devs spend time making the PVP and PVE stronger instead of working on the "romantic" aspect.

If I wanted romance and marriage in an MMO I'd have stayed in Second Life!

I decided to add this response in the romance in trek thread here that I made in the trek forums below:

Okay, romance aside for a moment and I would agree with a lot of what has been said here, the devs need to make those npc's 'fun' to be around. If the the game is going to be made up of 50% exploration as were told it will then were going to be around these npcs alot of the time. Making them more interesting by allowing players to develop relationships with them ( note this does not mean romantic relationships ), will allow players to enjoy having them around rather than be bored with the fact they only provide a bonus to your ships skills in combat/research etc. As has been pointed out, trek had a number of relationships going on between the captain and bridge crew of every show in every series. It would be very dissapointing to me if this were to be left out, especially when the occasional humour comes out of it. Examples for instance, Guinen using the ships crew as guinea pigs to try out new mixes of drinks, with worf saying prune juice was a warriors drink and data wanting more of a drink that he found horribly revolting just to experience that emotion after activating his emotion chip.

It is moments like these that helped shaped our love for star trek and it would be a shame if the devs were to overlook this aspect of relationships between the player and crew. How would the devs implement this? A good question, I dont know myself, but I do know it would be a shame if all you get out your crew are bonus's to run your ship... IMHO.

I think this is something important that the devs should not overlook.

I think that there should be some basic options for romance, but they shouldnt make to big a deal out of it.

I always thought the concept of romance, marriage, animated sex, and the like in games, was somewhat ridiculous.

Sandbox style games like Second Life can pull it off because they are sandbox, but other genre games, I just dont think too much of it.

As a rogue...I'm interested.:)
-----------

I think it is a great idea that is continuing to get more and interesting as we play games alone or together.

Everyone should be excited about the future as 'Adaptive A.I. are now here.

As someone pointed out. People will always work in romance somehow, so I expect that ought to be interesting as well.

Speaking of Horgons (sp). There is always 'RISA' for the 'no strings attached' crowd.
