The strange thing is it not only looks like wood, it looks like a plank or railroad tie... While this could be a natural rock formation, (we have stranger things on Earth like these 200lb boulders that "scoot" across the salt flats) there is a third possibility that it is petrified wood, particularly if this was the remains of a shallow sea, or riverbed. The rock formations certainly look like river rock. As far as photoshop, the pic I looked at was located on what appeared to be a legit Nasa webpage. The exploding planet theory, espoused earlier, has been put forth in detail by Richard C. Hoagland, author of the Monuments of Mars. If anyone has a serious interest in Mars and the possibility that advanced life existed there, the book is compelling in its detailing of strange "structures" arranged in precise geometrical relationship to each other suggesting that they are part of a planned city. For those who think that far fetched, I would point out that Washington DC is laid out with similar relational coordination of angles, which is not surprising considering it was designed by members of the Masonic Lodge. The Masons consider themselves a repository of lost and ancient knowledge, and perhaps they are right. At any rate there are other pictures one can find on the net which seem to indicate shadows being cast by trees of some sort.
The real question is, in Star Trek, since there is a Mars colony, which theory will be confirmed? Is it possible that they discovered these "formations" and found that they are real?
