Greetings and Salutations Trek Gamers

Its been a little while since we the last edition of Hailing Frequency – I am sure allot of you thought we had kicked the bucket – but never fear – Hailing Frequency will always persevere.

There has been a lot going on recently, but do not worry as we have been keeping tabs on all of it. During this show, K’sua’indra gets us all caught up on the Star Trek Gaming News for the last couple of months.

Following this, we sit down for a chat with Captain Source of the Enterprise Temporal Cold War Project who is able to update us on everything going on over there. We also get to hear samples of TCW’s music which is layered into the background throughout the interview – and some of their voice acting talent!

Additionally, we also announce details of a competition in association with Lightspeed Design Studios.

We also discuss and review the recently released ‘Star Trek Conquest’ before moving onto a brilliant episode of Mod Weekly from Croesus.

After Mod Weekly, we talk in detail about the recently released screenshot from perpetual entertainment – be aware that portions of this discussion may offend the STO-Lovers out there.

Finally – Just before we end the show, we run a segment compiled by myself as a response to a cry from community member “RonaldRabbit” – detailing the best free star trek games out there!

I can't find the contest information on the other site, and that picture has no link.

Good show but I really cannot agree with Zach's assertions that somehow that ST:O screenshot looks better that EVE-Online: Trinity.  I just viewed the HD trailer for Trinity and it looks amazing, whereas that ST:O screenshot is clearly awful if for no other reason than the awful scaling of planets and other objects in the background.  I have not played EVE myself and I have no idea how well the large ships or other objects may look up close but from what I have seen of the Trinity Expansion it far exceeds the quality of anything that this screenshot would have us believe we will be seeing in ST:O.

I really do genuinly feel that the screenshot looks in parts better than Eve: Trinity. Obviously i could be wrong however, there is something about the STO one that makes it feel better.

Hey Mindwipe - Good to see you listened to the show! Glad you enjoyed it!

Folks - Here is the link to the TCW Competition! http://forum.enterprise-tcw.com/viewtopic.php?t=1048

agree to lepton about the show: good one! ;)

k'suas outburst at the end, brilliant. anyway, regarding the latest sto screenshot, it looks kinda cute in the sense of dinky to me like if it was made to appeal more the future female players who, and we have to admit that sadly, don't usually find themselves liking the trek "realism" depicted in the shows and series with that certain lack of bright and shiny looks.

anyway it remains to be seen how "flexible" the engine will be in terms of toning down colors and if there even will be rather "separate" areas in the universe where hardcore-trekkies have their own "keep-out and watch for the dog ;)"-space to go after their own quests and stuff in a little more tng-like atmosphere.
also it'd be interesting how much in-game details are to be customized by the player. I mean one can easily imagine some players wanting to open up a small private in-game fleetyard where a lot of people design and engineer new starships, have to assemble and collect pieces of starship technology (probably from wrecked old ships or from local privateers selling them the necessary goods or via quests from merchantmen for example) and later on make it all work and actually patent that ship at starfleet bureau for ship design and patentation :D.

so via that way one could smoothly introduce talented startrek-dedicated mesh creators (and there are trek-uniquely many of those out there, so it wouldn't be a wasted thought to think about that seriously) to the game so they can actually do their usual stuff but now for the benefit of the game (the "bureau" mentioned above would be run by members of PE's team which would check the 3d model for too heavy armament and maybe ingame problems with the PE model loader, bad polygon numbers and so on).

this would be truely catching the Star Trek sense IMHO. Also, people who complain now about the design can do it better later on themselves. Maybe even character animators can be found who freely develop trek races (old and new) so that even a second official STO version could be served on the servers which feature a fan-based content with a little more darker and non-stylized approach like seen in the last screenshot.

Trek universe is very rich and space is wide, why not enrich PE's world by it too. I assume here that space in STO is near infinite too and only limited by the amount of servers serving the game which adjusts of course with the number of paying customers like usual so I actually see no problem in all that. I mean it's a bit Second Life - style but why not? In the end it's an MMO too :).

I am glad you liked K'suan'indra's change of character in this show. It was Kinneas's idea actually - he experimented last show with taking her away from the "vulcan" like model she has been using, and asked for a more upbeat tone which was increated in this show to great success i feel.

I agree with alot of the comments you have made there about STO too malle.

With regards to how customisable in game details will be for STO there are two pieces of information we have at the moment that would suggest the answer being - "We will be able to customise alot"

One of these relates to a question Hailing Frequency asked Daron in an interview about how customisable character themselves will be - the answer was that characters would be highly customisable - with a similar character creation and modification system to those seen in other MMOs such as Second Life.

Secondly, it has been suggested recently, and unofficially that the new company which has effectivly just bought Perpetual, is keen to have Star Trek Online modified to reflect the system which alot of Taiwanese MMOs choose to use these days.

Allow people to have basic characters within the game for free - without a monthly charge. Any transactions in the game would be made using "real world" currency, and if a player wishes to advance beyond a certain level they pay a monthly fee. This is how income is generated to support all of the freeloaders.

Alot of these styles of MMO choose to have extensive in game content creation tools - which in the best cases let you create new content from scratch, and in the not so good examples, allow you to only modify within a very small set of specifications, existing media.

Thus - If a player wanted to open up a private ship yard independant of Starfleet - they may well be able too.

This is speculation though - if you want a better answer, i suggest you post this question specifically, in the STOzone section of the forums - where MrJuliano, our STO expert, will see it and answer it.

Anyway - In Conclusion - GLAD YOU ARE ALL ENJOYING THE SHOW!
