"Kingworld" - The new kid in the Star Trek Gaming Town
« on: 22 January 2008 05:39 PM »
Ever heard of Kingworld?

Until just a few days ago, the name of this company was unknown to the majority of us, however, following an investigation by "Hailing Frequency" - it has been revealed that this company may very well hold the key to the future of Star Trek Gaming.

Recently - a number of rumours have been circulating the internet - rumours relating to star trek gaming. The rumour is that there will be a new high budget star trek game released at some point in 2008 that is a tie in to the new JJ Abrams Star Trek movie due for release on December 25th 2008.

In their recent investigation, Hailing Frequency sought to either confirm or debunk these rumours - and the findings have been quite interesting. While nothing solid has been revealed, there is definetly enough to warrant some optimism.

Bethesda Softworks currently holds the rights to develop star trek games accross all platforms - these rights cover all forms of star trek, including TV series, and all of the movies. However, what alot of people did not notice when the original deal was signed between Viacom and Bethesda, is  that the specific wording stated "All CURRENT TV Series and Movies".

Of course, this means that Bethesda Softworks have no rights to develop any games based on the new JJ Abrams film or any new TV franchise that might appear in the future.

This opens up some exicing possibilities. The Star Trek Gaming community, for the most part, have not been very happy with the job that Bethesda has been doing - Star Trek Legacy was recieved with a somewhat disappointed reaction, Star Trek Encounters and Star Trek Conquest have both been budget games - very much so in fact - the only well recieved game so far has been Star Trek Tactical Assault, for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP platforms.

Currently, there are no more announced games from Bethesda Softworks, however sources inside the company seem to suggest that there are a few concepts and pitches that are being juggled around - The current concensus of the Star Trek Gaming community however, is that Bethesda is just here to make a quick buck, and that the likelyness of any high budget games from them is quite low.

So the question is - What if another company was responsible for making and publishing any games based on future star trek content? Would the future of Star Trek Gaming look any different?

This is where KingWorld comes in. For those of you who have never heard of this company - Kingworld is an operating name of CBS Enterprises, which is the division of CBS that is responsible for CBS Consumer Products - putting them directly in charge of merchandising the new star trek franchise.

When contacted - KingWorld would neither confirm or deny that they were working with anyone on a Star Trek Game based on the new movie, however, it was suggested that we call back at a later date, when more information might be available.

What conclusions can we draw from this? Firstly, unless Bethesda Softworks is prepared to fork out a large sum of money for rights to develop games based on the new movie aka Franchise reboot - then Bethesda's offering of games will be limited to the existing star trek base. Lets be clear, CBS is investing a large amount of money into re-envisioning star trek - they are not going to let their new gaming license get away for too little a sum of money.

Secondly, if there is going to be a game based on the new movie, it will be from a new developer and publisher - most likely to be announced closer to the release of the movie - perhaps in Quarter 4 of this year.

Thirdly, while that might have been somewhat under the radar until now, KingWorld is definetly a company to be keeping an eye on - they are, at this moment in time, the Q Continuum of Star Trek - nothing happens unless they wiill it.

So for now, let us extend a warm welcome for KingWorld, and indeed, the as yet unannounced developers working on the rumoured star trek movie tie in game. Heres hoping its a good one!

We can only hope that Kingworld will be the King of Star Trek gaming. Though ovie tie in games never seem to do well.

it's also about the short period of time they have till the movie is finished. I hope they started early enough or with a big enough team to make something substantial. Sure would be my questions to them  :gorn1:
